Southwestern University PHINMA
The Southwestern University, officially the Southwestern University PHINMA (SWU PHINMA), is a private university in Cebu City, Philippines. Founded and opened in the summer of 1946 by two pharmacists, SWU originally started as Southwestern Colleges and achieved university status on December 11, 1959. The university and its base hospital were acquired by PHINMA Education, a subsidiary of PHINMA Corporation in 2015. The university was renamed to Southwestern University PHINMA and the hospital from Sacred Heart Hospital to Southwestern University Medical Center. The university changed the logo and closed its South Campus in Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City. It has a large number of international students from different countries. Ricardo "Ric-Ric" Marata (December 21, 1964 – April 17, 2010) was a Filipino former professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association. Ernesto Degumbis Lariosa, also known as Nyor Erning, (December 11, 1944 – August 20, 2019) was a Filipino Visayan writer, poet, and columnist from Cebu, Philippines and a three-time Palanca awardee in Cebuano short story. Mary Joy Reyes Tabal (born July 13, 1989) is a Filipino marathon runner. She is the first female Filipino marathon runner to qualify for the Olympics, which she has done by running a time of 2:43:29 in the Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon in 2016.
