Southwest High School (Kansas City, Missouri)
Southwest High School was a comprehensive high school located at 6512 Wornall Road in Kansas City, Missouri. It was part of the Kansas City, Missouri School District. The school is in the Brookside neighborhood, two blocks south of Border Star Montessori. It was the only school in the Kansas City, Missouri School District that had on-site planetarium and science laboratories. The school was founded in 1925 and grew throughout the years. During the 1970s, the school experienced significant desegregation and civil unrest. The school slowly began to struggle, both financially and academically and closed in 1998. The school reopened the following year as Southwest Charter School, but closed again in 2005. The school reopened yet again in 2008 as Southwest Early College Campus, but closed at the end of the school year in 2016. Kansas City, Missouri
Kansas City (abbreviated KC or KCMO) is the largest city in Missouri by population and area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 508,090 in 2020, making it the 36th most-populous city in the United States. Henry Bloch
Henry Wollman Bloch (July 30, 1922 – April 23, 2019) was an American businessman and philanthropist. He was the co-founder and (since 2000) the chairman ''emeritus'' of the American tax-preparation company H&R Block. Henry and his brother, Richard Bloch, founded H&R Block in 1955 in Kansas City, Missouri. Early life and education Bloch was born to a Jewish family in Kansas City on July 30, 1922, the son of Hortense (Bienenstock) and Leon Bloch. He attended Southwest High School, and was an undergraduate at University of Missouri–Kansas City. He later attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, graduating in 1944. He was initiated as a brother of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity's Phi chapter at the University of Michigan in 1940. Calvin Trillin
Calvin Marshall Trillin (born 5 December 1935) is an American journalist, humorist, food writer, poet, memoirist and novelist. He is a winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor (2012) and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2008). Early life and education Calvin Trillin was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1935 to Edythe and Abe Trillin. In his book ''Messages from My Father'', he said his parents called him "Buddy".
