Southside Chicago
The South Side is an area of Chicago, Illinois, U.S. It lies south of the city's Chicago Loop, Loop area in the downtown. Geographically, it is the largest of the three sides of the city that radiate from downtown, with the other two being the north and West Side, Chicago, west sides. Much of the South Side came from the city's annexation of townships such as Hyde Park Township, Cook County, Illinois, Hyde Park. The city's Sides have historically been divided by the Chicago River and its branches. The South Side of Chicago was originally defined as all of the city south of the main branch of the Chicago River, but it now excludes the Chicago Loop, Loop. The South Side has a varied ethnic composition and a great variety of income levels and other demographic measures. It has a reputation for crime, although most crime is contained within certain neighborhoods, not throughout the South Side itself, and residents range from affluent to middle class to poor. Victory Monument (Chicago)
Erected in 1927, the Victory Monument, is based on an idea by John A. Nyden, and was sculpted by Leonard Crunelle. It was built to honor the Eighth Regiment of the Illinois National Guard, an African-American unit that served in France during World War I. It is located in the Black Metropolis-Bronzeville District in the Douglas community area on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 30, 1986. It was designated a Chicago Landmark on September 9, 1998. An annual Memorial Day ceremony is held at the monument. Description and history The Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art describes the monument: ::A white granite shaft topped with a bronze doughboy sculpture. On the monument's shaft are three bronze relief panels depicting life-sized figures.
