Southport Offshore Rescue Trust
Southport Offshore Rescue Trust (SORT) is the registered charity that runs the Southport Independent Lifeboat, a marine and land based search and rescue organisation on the Sefton coastline. Independent of the RNLI, the Trust relies on donations and fundraising to support itself to provide a first class life saving service in an area of coast and water covering between the River Mersey to the River Ribble, and up to offshore, including Southport Marine Lake. It is one of many Independent lifeboats in Britain and Ireland not supported by the RNLI. The Southport Lifeboat have helped in the safe return of over 250 people since being formed in 1988, and aim to give the crew the best equipment possible to help save lives on the coastline. The crew currently operate two lifeboats, three ATV quad bikes, Drones, mud rescue equipment and a land based search team from the old RNLI boathouse, built in 1886, and are trained to deal with a wide range of incidents. Southport And St Anne's Lifeboats Disaster
The Southport and St Anne's lifeboats disaster, commonly known as the Mexico disaster, occurred on the evening of the 9th December 1886. In all, 27 lifeboat men lost their lives trying to save the crew of the German barque called the Mexico. 14 of the 16 crew members aboard the Southport Lifeboat, Eliza Fernley, drowned along with all 13 of the St Anne's Lifeboat, Laura Janet. The 12 crew of the Mexico were eventually rescued by the Lytham Lifeboat, Charles Biggs. In the words of Queen Victoria, written in her private journal Saturday 11 December 1886, ''"A dreadful misfortune has happened on the Lancashire coast, the loss of life boats, & many lives, a terrible & inconceivable thing!"'' Birkdale
Birkdale is an area of Southport, within the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, though historically in Lancashire, in the north-west of England. The area is located on the Irish Sea coast, approximately a mile away from the centre of Southport. From 1894 to 1912, Birkdale and the adjoining suburb/village of Ainsdale were administered by Birkdale Urban District Council before becoming part of the county borough of Southport.
