Southport, Oregon
Southport is an unincorporated locale in Coos County, Oregon, United States. It was located along Southport Creek, near where the creek flows into Isthmus Slough, south of the city of Coos Bay, at an elevation of 30 feet (9 m). The former community is now a ghost town. Location The Southport town site is located on Southport Lane, off of US Highway 101, south of the city of Coos Bay in Coos County. History Sometime between 1875 and 1877 B. B. Jones opened a coal mine named the Southport Mine, and the village of Southport sprang up next to the mine."Southern Oregon. Coos County ( ) is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 64,929. The county seat is Coquille. The county was formed from the western parts of Umpqua and Jackson counties. It is named after a tribe of Native Americans who live in the region. Black Diamond is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 4,697 at the 2020 census. In 2021, with a 21% growth rate, Black Diamond was the fastest growing small city in King County. Beaver Hill, Oregon
Beaver Hill is an unincorporated community in Coos County, Oregon, United States. It is about south of the city of Coos Bay, east of U.S. Route 101 and west of Oregon Route 42. Like nearby Coaledo, Beaver Hill was formerly a coal mining community. The Beaver Hill mine was opened in 1894 by the J. D. Spreckels Company and the town was later owned by Southern Pacific. By 1896, Beaver Hill was an important community in the area and on January 11, it incorporated as a city. In 1926, 15 of the city's 16 remaining voters chose to disincorporate. Today there is nothing left at the site. The community had a branch off the Coos Bay Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad, but it never had a post office by the name Beaver Hill. The post office at this locale was named Preuss; it ran from 1917 to 1924. It was named for a local teacher, Rosa Preuss.
