Colin Southgate
Sir Colin Southgate (24 July 1938 – 26 July 2021) was an English businessman. He served as chief executive of Thorn EMI and chairman of the Royal Opera House. Early life Colin Grieve Southgate was born in New Malden, Surrey on 24 July 1938. He was the only child of Cyril, a fruit merchant in the old Covent Garden market, and Edith. Upon the outbreak of World War II, Edith took Southgate and his elder sister Jean to Northampton. After the war he attended primary school in Kingston upon Thames, and his family relocated to Epsom when he was a teenager. He won a place at the public City of London School, making the journey there by train. Career Southgate trained as an actuary at National Provident Institution, in a period he later described as the worst two and a half years of his life. William Southgate
Sir William David Southgate (born 4 August 1941) is a New Zealand conductor and composer. He was the first New Zealand-based artist to be knighted (as a Knight Bachelor, in 1994). Biography Southgate was born in Waipukurau in 1941 to Alfred John and Phyllis (née Maden) Southgate, and grew up in Otago. He showed an interest in music early in life and at about the age of five, he discovered a pianola which encouraged him to learn the piano. At the age of nine, he recorded in his diary that he had decided to dedicate his life to music. Southgate attended Otago Boys' High School from 1954 to 1959 and afterwards, the University of Otago. He graduated with Master of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees, both with first class honours, and also taught composition, instrumentation and fugue. Tony Southgate
Tony Southgate (born 25 May 1940, Coventry, England) is a British engineer and former racing car designer. He designed many successful cars, including Jaguar's Le Mans-winning XJR-9, and cars for almost every type of circuit racing. He was responsible for the chassis design of Ford's RS200 Group B rally car. Southgate was employed as chief designer or technical director for many Formula One teams for over twenty years. These teams included BRM, Shadow and Arrows. Southgate retired after producing the Audi R8C, which was a major influence in the Bentley Speed 8, which won Le Mans in 2003. He continues to be a regular visitor to current and historic race meetings. Richard Southgate (1729–1795) was an English clergyman and numismatist. Life Born at Alwalton, Huntingdonshire, a few miles from Peterborough, on 16 March 1729, he was the eldest of ten children of William Southgate (d. February 1771), a farmer of the parish, who married Hannah (d. 1772), daughter of Robert Wright of Castor, Northamptonshire, a surveyor and civil engineer. He was educated at private schools at Uppingham and Fotheringay and at the Peterborough grammar school. With an exhibition from the school he went to St John's College, Cambridge, in 1745, and graduated B.A. in the Easter term of 1749. Southgate took holy orders in 1752, and, after serving the curacy of Weston, Lincolnshire, held the rectory of Woolley, Huntingdonshire from 8 November 1754 till 1759. Maurice Southgate
Maurice Southgate (20 June 1913 – 17 March 1990), code named Hector, was an officer in the Royal Air Force and an agent of the United Kingdom's clandestine Special Operations Executive (SOE) organization during World War II. The purpose of SOE was to conduct espionage, sabotage, and reconnaissance in occupied Europe against the Axis powers, especially Nazi Germany. SOE agents allied themselves with resistance groups and supplied them with weapons and equipment parachuted in from England. Southgate was the organiser (leader) of the SOE's STATIONER network (or circuit) operating in a large area centered on Châteauroux in central France and Tarbes in southern France from 1942 to 1944. He was captured by the SS in Montluçon in 1944 and deported to Buchenwald concentration camp where he survived until its liberation by American forces in 1945.
