Southern Victoria
Southern Victoria is a village in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. It was formed through the 2023 New Brunswick local governance reforms. History Southern Victoria was incorporated on January 1, 2023 via the amalgamation of the former villages of Aroostook and Perth-Andover as well as the concurrent annexation of adjacent unincorporated areas. Geography The village is divided by the Saint John River. Attractions Southern Victoria is host to the annual Gathering of the Scots Festival at Veteran's Field on the last weekend in May and the Larlee Creek Hullabaloo in August, held at Baird's Campground. Other major events in the Village are the Tuff Muck Challenge on the last Saturday in July and the Dam Run marathon on the first Saturday in October. Local governance reform in the Canadian province of New Brunswick in was implemented on January 1, 2023. This resulted in a significant reorganization of the municipal entities in the province, including a reduction in the number of entities from 340 to 89, consisting of 77 local governments and 12 rural districts nested within 12 regional service commissions. Perth-Andover (2016 population: 1,590) is a village in Victoria County, New Brunswick, Canada. Geography The village is divided by the Saint John River with Perth on the east bank and Andover on the west bank; each was a separate community until municipal amalgamation in 1966. Perth-Andover's population meets the requirements for "town" status under the provincial Municipalities Act; however, it has not applied to change from village designation. It was decided by the council at the time to keep the 'Village ' designation. History Andover was originally called Little Tobique, the community was given the name Andover, from the town in Hampshire, England. Aroostook, New Brunswick
Aroostook ( ) (2016 population: 306) is a Canadian village in Victoria County, New Brunswick. Geography The village is located on the west bank of the Saint John River at the mouth of the Aroostook River. It is approximately 11 kilometres north of Perth-Andover. History Aroostook was founded in 1852 and became an important railway centre in 1878 with the completion of the New Brunswick Railway from Fredericton to Edmundston and the Aroostook River Railway from Aroostook to Caribou, Maine. Both railways were leased by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1890 and a large rail yard and locomotive roundhouse was constructed in the village to service CPR trains operating in northwestern New Brunswick and northern Maine. The construction of taxpayer-funded highways during the 20th century saw railways decline in use following World War II.
