Southern Football League
The Southern League is a men's football competition featuring semi-professional clubs from the South and Midlands of England. Together with the Isthmian League and the Northern Premier League it forms levels seven and eight of the English football league system. The structure of the Southern League has changed several times since its formation in 1894, and currently there are 84 clubs which are divided into four divisions. The Central and South Divisions are at step 3 of the National League System (NLS), and are feeder divisions, mainly to the National League South but also to the National League North. Feeding the Premier Divisions are two regional divisions, Division One Central and Division One South, which are at step 4 of the NLS. These divisions are in turn fed by various regional leagues. London League (football)
The London League was a football competition that was held in the London and surrounding areas of south-east England from 1896 until 1964. In 1896 the president of the London League was Arnold Hills founder of Thames Ironworks F.C. (which later reformed as West Ham United). One of the men who helped draft the rules of the competition was Francis Payne, club secretary of Thames Ironworks F.C. in 1897. The league started with three divisions, the 3rd Grenadier Guards winning the inaugural championship. The league fluctuated between having a single division and reaching four divisions. Before World War I, most of the senior London Football League clubs fielded a reserve side in the London League. In 1964, the London League ceased to exist, merging with the Aetolian League to form the Greater London League, which then further merged in 1971 with the Metropolitan League to form the Metropolitan–London League. Frederick Mearns
Frederick Mearns (31 March 1879 – 22 January 1931) was an English footballer who played for Hartlepool United and Barnsley as a goalkeeper. During his time with Barnsley, he was an FA Cup finalist in 1910. Mearns later worked as a trainer for Durham City. Club career Tottenham signed Mearns from Kettering Town in March 1903 to be understudy to Charlie Williams. He made his debut on 5 October 1903 for Spurs in a Western League game to Queens Park Rangers where he kept a clean sheet in a 3–0 win. By the end of the season Mearns helped Tottenham to win the Western League. He played a total of five Southern League games, four Western League games and four London League games and then moved onto Bradford City. He played for Bradford City between June 1904 and May 1906. He made 21 league and 2 FA Cup appearances for the club. Mearns joined Hartlepool United in 1908 for their inaugural season in the North Eastern League where they came fourth. Michael Good (footballer)
Michael H. S. Good (1 July 1875 – after 1904), sometimes known as Micky Good, was a Scottish professional footballer who made 71 appearances in the Football League playing for Small Heath, Preston North End and Bristol City. Good was born in Airdrie, which was then in Lanarkshire. He played for Airdrie Hill and for Airdrieonians before joining Small Heath in 1896. A short, stockily-built forward, able to cover the half-back positions as well, he made his debut in the Second Division on 19 December 1896, playing at right half in a 2–0 defeat away at Loughborough. He had a run of games at inside right at the end of the 1897–98 season and the beginning of the next, but failed to score enough goals.Matthews, pp. 144–45. Fred Spiksley
Fred Spiksley (25 January 1870 – 28 July 1948) was an English footballer and coach, who played as a forward for Sheffield Wednesday and England. He also played for Gainsborough Trinity, Glossop North End, Leeds City, Watford. After retiring as a player in 1906, he worked as a coach and won national league titles in Sweden, Mexico and Germany. During the First World War he was arrested but escaped from a German Police prison. Early and personal life Spiksley was born in Gainsborough, the son of a boilermaker. He was married to Ellen with a son, Fred Jr. He and Ellen later divorced due to his adultery. Spiksley was also a gambler who suffered heavy losses and was made bankrupt in 1909.
