Southern Syria Clashes (July 2025–present)
On 13 July 2025, fighting began between Druze and Bedouin armed groups in the city of Suwayda and its surrounding villages in southern Syria. The Syrian transitional government deployed the Syrian Armed Forces to the area to restore order between 14–16 July. An agreement was reached between Druze leaders and the government on 15 July, but one of the Druze leaders, Hikmat al-Hijri, called for armed resistance against the government and Bedouin. There have been reports of extrajudicial killings and abuse of both Druze and Bedouin civilians. Israel launched airstrikes on the Syrian military, saying it defends the Druze. Israel had recently invaded its buffer zone with southwestern Syria and had been demanding the Syrian military stay out of the region. Syria's foreign ministry accused Israel of inflaming sectarian tensions to undermine the new Syrian government. On 8 December 2024, Israel invaded the buffer zone in southwestern Syria adjacent to the Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights, Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, and carried out an aerial campaign targeting the Syrian Army's military capabilities, following the fall of the Assad regime. Israel took advantage of the power vacuum created by the fall of Assad to increase the amount of territory it controlled by several hundred square miles. Israel declared the Agreement on Disengagement between Israel and Syria, 1974 Disengagement agreement with Syria to be void. Israel initially said this new invasion would be "temporary", but later said it would hold onto the territory for an "unlimited time".
