Southern Pines Golf Club
Southern Pines Golf Course is a golf course in Southern Pines, North Carolina. History Southern Pines had been settled by Scottish immigrants in the 19th century and the first golf course opened in 1896. The town of Southern Pines formally opened the Southern Pines Country Club in 1907 adjacent to the Piney Woods Inn. At the time, the course’s layout was credited to J. N. Peacock and James McNabb, both of whom were assistants to Donald Ross. The precise configuration of the earliest version of SPGC is unknown. The course was 36 holes by 1929 although by 1935 it had dropped back to 27 holes. Mike Sherman, a Connecticut businessman, owned the course in the years following World War II. Sam Snead set a course record of 63, eight strokes under par on November 8, 1946 in the Southern Pines open to Ben Hogan's 71. Snead broke the course record of 66, set by Johnny Schooner in 1939. Donald Ross (golfer)
Donald James Ross (November 23, 1872 – April 26, 1948) was a golf course designer. He was born in Dornoch, Scotland, but became a citizen of and spent most of his adult life in the United States. Ross started his career by being an apprentice to Old Tom Morris at St Andrews in Scotland around 1899. With the help of an American agronomy student, fellow Scotsman Robert White from St. Andrews, Ross decided to move to America. Ross invested all his life savings to move to the United States and walked off the boat with only $2. In America, he got his first job at Oakley Country Club in Watertown, Massachusetts. He quickly rose to the position of golf professional at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, where he began his course designing career. The Federal League of Base Ball Clubs, known simply as the Federal League, was an American professional baseball league that played its first season as a minor league in 1913 and operated as a "third major league", in competition with the established National and American Leagues, from 1914 to 1915. The Federal League came together in early 1913 through the work of John T. Powers, and immediately challenged the operations of organized baseball as a minor league playing outside of the National Agreement. After James A. William Joseph Shettsline (October 25, 1863 – February 22, 1933) was a baseball executive who served as the business manager of the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League from 1896 to 1926. He also served as club president from 1904 to 1909 and manager from to . Shettsline began his career with the Phillies in 1883 as an office boy and by 1896 was the club's secretary and business manager. In 1898, upon the firing of George Stallings, he was given the managerial reins. In his five seasons at the helm, Shettsline posted a 367–302 record, with his best season in .
