Southern Operational Command
The Operational Command South (OC South) is a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces in the southern part of Ukraine, which was formed in January 1998 as the Southern Operation Command on the basis of the Odesa Military District and headquartered in Odesa. In 2005-2013 it was known as the Southern Operation Association. Until 2015 Operational Command South covered 9 oblasts and autonomous republics: Odesa, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk oblasts and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. In 2015 eastern parts of the operation command territory were passed on to newly formed Operation Command East based in Dnipro. The headquarters of the OC South was relocated from Odesa to Mykolaiv. Hvardiiske, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast
Hvardiiske ( uk, Гвардійське) (translated from Ukrainian and Russian - Guards) is an urban-type settlement in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine. It is part of Novomoskovsk Raion. Hvardiiske is located on the left bank of the Samara River, about upstream from Cherkaske. It belongs to Cherkaske settlement hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. Population: According to the 2001 census, population was 5,199. Hvardiiske is better known for housing the 25th Airborne Brigade (Ukraine) (since summer of 2002) and originally was established in 1957 as a military base for the 42nd Guards Tank Division. The 25th Separate Airbone Sicheslav Brigade ( uk, 25-та окрема повітрянодесантна Січеславська бригада) is an airborne formation of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces. The 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade Kholodnyi Yar () is a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. In October 2022 American military correspondent David Axe described the formation as "one of the most brutally effective" of Ukraine’s front-line brigades.
