Southern Line (İZBAN)
The Southern Line ( tr, Güney hattı) is an electrified commuter rail line running south from Alsancak Terminal in Izmir to Torbalı operated by İZBAN, using trackage owned by the Turkish State Railways. The route services the densely populated areas of western Buca and central Gaziemir as well as Adnan Menderes International Airport via the rebuilt airport station. Between 2010 and 2016 the southern terminus of the line was Cumaovası near Menderes. On 6 February 2016, the line was extended about south to Tepeköy in Torbalı and on 9 September 2017 extended further south to Selçuk. All stations are wheelchair accessible with elevators. The Southern Line has carried approximately 1 million passengers in the first six months from opening and carries an average 40,500 passengers daily, making it the busiest commuter rail line in Turkey, surpassing the Haydarpaşa-Gebze Commuter Line in İstanbul that held the record for over 30 years. Gaziemir
Gaziemir is a district of İzmir Province in the Aegean region of Turkey. It is one of the metropolitan districts of Greater İzmir, and is situated to the south of central İzmir ( Konak) on the road into town. İzmir Adnan Menderes International Airport is situated within the boundaries of the district, as is the Aegean Free Zone export processing industrial park, which is also home to the third space camp in the world, Space Camp Turkey. History Gaziemir was founded in the 14th century by Umur Beg (Ghazi Umur, called Umur Pasha in Ottoman sources) of the dynasty of the Beylik of Aydin, who had brought and settled Yörük clans from Konya to the region. The first mention in Ottoman records dates from 1530 and the settlement was named Seydiköy in honor of a Yörük chief, Seydi Ahmed, whose tomb still stands. Hilal Junction
Hilal station formerly Istravoz station is a railway station located in İzmir, Turkey. It is located east of Basmane next to the famous Hilal Junction on the Izmir-Afyon railway. The station was famous for being located next to the only diamond crossing in Turkey. The Oriental Railway Company's Alsancak-Aydın Main Line crossed with the Smyrna Cassaba Railway's Basmane-Afyon Main Line. Due to the layout of the tracks, the station was first named ''Istravoz railway station'' in 1866. ''Istravoz'' (from Greek σταυρóς) means Cross in Turkish. Alsancak
Alsancak is a centrally situated large quarter (or a zone; ''semt'' in Turkish) in İzmir, Turkey, within the boundaries of the metropolitan district of Konak, the historic center of the city. Selçuk
Selçuk is a town in İzmir Province in the Aegean Region of Turkey. It is located northeast of the ancient city of Ephesus, that was once home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its previous Greek name, Agios Theologos (Άγιος Θεολόγος), referred to John the Theologian, because emperor Justinian had erected there a basilica in honour of the saint. ''Ayasoluk'' is a corrupted form of the original name. In the 14th century, it was the capital of the Beylik of Aydin, and visited by Ibn Battuta. Tepeköy Railway Station
Tepeköy railway station is a railway station in Torbalı and is the southern terminus of the İZBAN Southern Line. The station was originally opened on 14 November 1861 by the Oriental Railway Company. Between 2015–16, Tepeköy was rebuilt and expanded from a one track station to three tracks to service commuter trains to and from Alsancak Terminal in Izmir. Menderes, İzmir
Menderes is a district of İzmir Province in Turkey. Overview Menderes district, which is notable for its satsumas, beautiful bays and historical riches, is from İzmir. The antique city of Lebedos is situated in the western corner of the district in Ürkmez locality.
