Southern California Lazers
The Southern California Lazers were an American soccer club based in Torrance, California that was a member of the American Soccer League. History The Lazers were formed in 1978 as an ASL expansion franchise in suburban Los Angeles and owned by real estate developer Jack Young, who formerly owned local rival Los Angeles Skyhawks. The club hired veteran English defender Laurie Calloway as head coach - the first opportunity of a coaching career that would include stints in the North American Soccer League and Major League Soccer. Arguably the biggest name on the roster was Rildo, the former Brazilian international defender who teamed with Pele on Brazil's national team, Santos FC, and the New York Cosmos. With 14 goals, forward Sid Wallace led the Lazers in scoring. Goalkeeper John Granville led the league with a 0.99 goals against average and posted seven clean sheets. Murdock Stadium
Featherstone Field, previously known as Murdock Stadium is a stadium on the campus of El Camino College in Torrance, California. Built in 1958 the stadium seats around 12,127 on wood-backed bleacher seats. It was home to the North American Soccer League's Los Angeles Aztecs for two years (1975–1976), the American Soccer League's Southern California Lazers for a single season in 1978, as well as several United States men's national soccer team FIFA World Cup qualification matches. Today, it hosts El Camino College's American football team. The stadium was originally named after the founding president of the college, Forrest G. Murdock. The stadium was also used as the main stadium in the 2005 remake of the 1974 film, '' The Longest Yard''. Jimmy Melia
James Melia (born 1 November 1937) is an English former footballer who spent most of his career playing for Liverpool and went on to become a manager. Playing career Liverpool Melia joined the Reds straight from St. Anthony's School as a 15-year-old, when manager Don Welsh saw the potential in the young schoolboy international's feet. Melia signed professional forms on his 17th birthday, 1 November 1954. After 23 appearances for Liverpool's reserve team, Melia made his début aged 18 on 17 December 1955 at Anfield in a 2nd Division fixture against Nottingham Forest. The visitors came up against an in form Billy Liddell who scored a hat-trick in the 5–2 victory, Jimmy also scored his first goal for the club in the 48th minute, John Evans got the other. Frank Towers (English Footballer)
Frank Towers (1835–1886) was an English actor, playwright and stage producer. History Towers was born in London, son of Joseph Johnson Towers, actor and manager of The Old Vic theatre, who may have been of Jewish extraction, and Catharine Towers, née Woolf. The son was also an actor, and given a benefit performance at that theatre on 17 March 1859, the play being ''Never Too Late to Mend'', from a novel by Charles Reade, concerning an English emigrant to Australia during the gold rush. John McGeady
John McGeady (born 17 April 1958) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as a winger in Scotland, England and the United States. He is the father of Republic of Ireland international player Aiden McGeady. Early life McGeady was born in Glasgow to parents originally from County Donegal, and educated at Holyrood Secondary School. Residing in Govanhill, with his father and younger brother Pat he attended matches of Third Lanark, whose ground was located a few blocks from their home, until the club folded in 1967. Playing career Beginning as an amateur in Scotland with Third Lanark (the juvenile team having continued after the demise of the professional arm), McGeady signed professional terms with Sheffield United in 1975, making 16 league appearances. Jack Howarth (footballer)
Jack Howarth (born 27 February 1945) is an English retired professional footballer who played as a centre forward. Active in England and the United States, Howarth made over 500 appearances in the Football League, scoring nearly 200 goals. His 171 league goals for Aldershot is a club record. Career Born in Crook, County Durham, Howarth began his career with local side Stanley United. He signed professional forms with Chelsea in 1963, but never made an appearance for them, and moved to Swindon Town a year later. Howarth also played in the Football League for Aldershot, Rochdale, Bournemouth and Southport, before moving to the United States to play for the Southern California Lazers of the second division American Soccer League. Bernard Fagan (born 29 January 1949) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defender. Fagan is currently active in the United States as a coach. Career Playing career Born in Sunderland, Fagan began his career with the youth team of his hometown club, before making his professional debut in 1969 with Northampton Town. Fagan played non-league football with Scarborough, before moving to the United States in 1974 to sign with the newly created Seattle Sounders of the North American Soccer League.
