Independent Women's Football League
The Independent Women's Football League (IWFL) was the first Women's American football league established by women players for women players. The league was founded in 2000, began play in 2001, and played its last season in 2018. Members of the original roster of the Austin Outlaws were the league's founders. Following the establishment of the league as a separate entity from the team, former outlaws players Laurie Frederick, Jaime Bailey and Sandra Plato became the original IWFL executive council. The So Cal Scorpions were a semi-pro women's American football team based in San Diego, California. In 2011, they played in the Women's Football Alliance after five seasons in the defunct Women's Professional Football League, The ownership brought the team to a spring league. National Women's Football Association
The National Women's Football Association (NWFA) was a full-contact American football league for women headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. The league was founded by Catherine Masters in 2000, as the two benchmark teams, the Alabama Renegades and the Nashville Dream played each other six times in exhibition games. The opening season was in 2001 featuring ten teams. The NWFA did not officially field any teams for the 2009 season. The NWFA was originally called the National Women's Football League, but changed its name after the 2002 season. The name change came after pressure from the National Football League. The NFL also required the league to change the logos of some teams whose logos resembled those of NFL teams. The Portland Fighting Shockwave is a women's professional football team competing in the Women's Football Alliance. The team is based in Portland, Oregon, and plays their home games at Hillsboro Stadium in nearby Hillsboro. California Quake
The California Quake was a women's professional tackle football team based in Los Angeles County, California. The Quake played for 13 seasons in the Western Conference of the Independent Women's Football League. Home games were played at Carson High School. The 2008 season brought new ownership to the Quake; now owned by longtime veteran player, Catherine B. Vivo. During the California Quake vs New Mexico Menace game on May 24, 2008, kicker Sarah "Ollie" Oliver broke a women's tackle football record by successfully kicking a 44-yard field goal.
