Southern Amateur
The Southern Amateur is an amateur golf tournament. It has been played since 1902 and is organized by the Southern Golf Association. From 1902 to 1963, it was played at match play. Since 1964, it has been played at stroke play. In December 2021, the Southern Amateur joined with six other tournaments to form the Elite Amateur Golf Series. Match Play
Match play is a scoring system for golf in which a player, or team, earns a point for each hole in which they have bested their opponents; as opposed to stroke play, in which the total number of strokes is counted over one or more rounds of 18 holes. In match play the winner is the player, or team, with the most points at the end of play. Although most professional tournaments are played using the stroke play scoring system, there are, or have been, some exceptions, for example the WGC Match Play and the Volvo World Match Play Championship, and most team events, for example the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup, all of which are in match play format. Casey Wittenberg
Casey Wittenberg (born November 30, 1984) is an American professional golfer who had a successful amateur career. Wittenberg was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He played collegiately at Oklahoma State University. He lost to Nick Flanagan in the finals of the 2003 U.S. Amateur. In 2004, he finished 13th at the Masters Tournament, the lowest amateur finish in 41 years. He was the only player in the field to improve his score each round. Additionally, he registered the lowest Sunday back 9 score (31) of any amateur in Masters history. At the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, he shot a four round total of 296, which was the second best of any amateur in the tournament that year. Wittenberg turned professional in 2004 and played on the PGA Tour, Web.com Tour (formerly Nationwide Tour), and mini-tours since. Justin Charles Garrett Leonard (born June 15, 1972) is an American professional golfer. He has twelve career wins on the PGA Tour, including one major, the 1997 Open Championship. Early years Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Leonard graduated from Lake Highlands High School in 1990. He attended the University of Texas in Austin and was the individual NCAA champion in 1994. Leonard won the 1992 U.S. Amateur, was a two-time All-American (1993, 1994), and won the Haskins Award in 1994 as the most outstanding collegiate golfer. Edward Loar
James Edward Loar III (born November 15, 1977) is an American professional golfer. Loar was born in Dallas, Texas. He is a left-handed golfer. Loar played college golf at Oklahoma State University (OSU). He won five college tournaments and his team won the NCAA Division I Championship in 2000. He was a four-time All-American at OSU. He also won four amateur events outside of college: the Southwest Amateur in 1997, the Southern Amateur in 1999, and the Sunnehanna Amateur in 1999 and 2000. Loar played on the 1998 Palmer Cup and 1999 Walker Cup teams. Loar turned professional in 2000 after graduating from OSU.
