Southern African Regional Universities Association
The 'Southern African Regional Universities Association'' was established in 2005 as a membership based association for the 66 public universities in the 15 countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). SARUA aims to assist in the general revitalization of higher education in Southern Africa and specifically to enhance and build the senior leadership capacity of SADC Higher Education institutions, thus enabling the sector to effectively respond to regional development challenges. Since its inception SARUA has undertaken a number of baseline research studies in the region to investigate key higher education issues facing the public universities in Southern Africa, including size and shape issues, funding issues, open access and science and technology and ICT. The University of Fort Hare is a public university in Alice, Eastern Cape, South Africa. It was a key institution of higher education for Africans from 1916 to 1959 when it offered a Western-style academic education to students from across sub-Saharan Africa, creating an African elite. Fort Hare alumni were part of many subsequent independence movements and governments of newly independent African countries. In 1959, the university was subsumed by the apartheid system, but it is now part of South Africa's post-apartheid public higher education system. Mzuzu University
Mzuzu University is one of the principal universities of Malawi. The school is located in Mzuzu, in the northern region of Malawi. It was founded in 1997 and accepted its first students in 1999. At the time the university opened its doors, the Chancellor was Malawi's former president Dr Bakili Muluzi and the first Vice Chancellor was Professor Terrence Davis. Professor Peter Mwanza, who later entered politics and became a cabinet minister, was active in establishing the university. He was Chairman of the University Council, and later Vice Chancellor. Midlands State University is a government owned university in Zimbabwe. The University of Malawi (UNIMA) is a public university established in 1965 and until 4 May 2021, when the university underwent a delinking, was composed of four constituent colleges located in Zomba, Blantyre, and Lilongwe. The University of Lubumbashi (), also known by the acronym UNILU, is one of the largest universities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located in Lubumbashi in Haut Katanga Province, previously Katanga Province. The campus is located in the northern part of the city, west of the airport. History The university was created in 1955 under Belgian colonial rule as the Official University of the Congo and Ruanda-Urundi (french: Université officielle du Congo et du Ruanda-Urundi) by the University of Liège and opened in 1956. The University of Kinshasa (french: Université de Kinshasa), commonly known as UNIKIN, is one of the three major universities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, together with the University of Kisangani and University of Lubumbashi. Originally founded in 1954 as Lovanium University during Belgian colonial rule, the current university was established following the division of the National University of Zaire (UNAZA) in 1981.
