''South of the Clouds'' is a 2004 Chinese film and the second film directed by the writer Zhu Wen. The film stands in stark contrast to Zhu's previous film. In terms of production, ''South of the Clouds'' received the cooperation of the state apparatus unlike 2001's '' Seafood'' which was an underground production shot on digital hand-held cameras. In terms of story, the transgressive tale of a prostitute and a policeman in ''Seafood'' is a far cry from ''South of the Clouds gentle tale of a retiree who fulfills a lifelong desire to travel to the southern province of Yunnan (literally "South of the Clouds"). Zhu Wen (writer)
Zhu Wen (; born 1967) is a Chinese short story writer turned director. Early life and writing Zhu Wen was born in 1967 in Quanzhou City, Fujian Province. He attended Southeast University in Nanjing, and graduated with a degree in electric power. After working as an engineer in a state-owned thermal power plant for five years, he quit his job in 1994 to become a freelance writer. His first published short story, ''I Love Dollars'', was denounced by some critics as the "shameless and indecent novel of a hooligan." In 1998, he instigated and became identified with the ''Rupture'' (''duanlie'') movement to voice dissatisfaction with the literary establishment. He sent questionnaires to about 70 writers, about 55 of which responded. The responses were sarcastic and mostly expressed discontent, and later spawned publications that nurtured more independence among writers. Mosuo
The Mosuo (; also spelled Moso, Mosso or Musuo), often called the Naxi among themselves, are a small ethnic group living in China's Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, close to the border with Tibet. Consisting of a population of approximately 40,000, many of them live in the Yongning region, around Lugu Lake, in Labai, in Muli, and in Yanyuan, located high in the Himalayas (). Although the Mosuo are culturally distinct from the Nashi, the Chinese government places them as members of the Nashi minority.
