South Yorkshire Junction Railway
The South Yorkshire Junction Railway was a railway which ran from Wrangbrook Junction on the main line of the Hull and Barnsley Railway to near Denaby Main Colliery Village, South Yorkshire. It was nominally an independent company sponsored by the Denaby and Cadeby Colliery Company but was worked by the Hull and Barnsley Railway. History The S.Y.J.R. received its Act of Parliament on 14 August 1890, and opened for goods traffic on 1 September 1894 and for passengers on 1 December the same year. The passenger service lasted less than 9 years, the last trains running on 1 February 1903. Intermediate passenger stations were at Sprotborough and Pickburn and Brodsworth. The Hull and Barnsley Railway was absorbed into the North Eastern Railway in 1922 and then to the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping. Denaby Main Colliery Village
Denaby Main is a village situated between Mexborough and Conisbrough in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. The village falls within the Doncaster MBC ward of Conisbrough and Denaby. It was built by the Denaby Main Colliery Company to house its workers and their families, and originally given the name Denaby Main Colliery Village, to distinguish it from the village of Denaby, about ⅔ mile away on the road to Hooton Roberts and Kilnhurst; from that time, the old village became known as Old Denaby. In due course the "Colliery Village" part of the name was lost, leaving the village to be known as Denaby Main. Sprotborough (H&B) Railway Halt
Sprotborough (H&B) railway station was a small station on the South Yorkshire Junction Railway, which ran south from Wrangbrook Junction, where it joined the main line of the Hull and Barnsley Railway. It was situated between Denaby and Conisbrough and Pickburn and Brodsworth station. History The station, consisting of two flanking platforms, was situated at a passing loop (which closed on 27 April 1967), on the single line railway. The main building, a single storey wooden structure with brick-built chimneys, was situated on the Hull-bound platform, as was the signal cabin which contained a 10 lever frame. The Denaby-bound platform was provided with a wooden waiting shelter. A house for the station master was built nearby and still stands. The station opened on 1 December 1894. The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Its main line survives to the present day as part of the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. Unlike many other pre-Grouping companies the NER had a relatively compact territory, in which it had a near monopoly. That district extended through Yorkshire, County Durham and Northumberland, with outposts in Westmorland and Cumberland. Great Northern And Great Central Joint Line
The West Riding and Grimsby Railway was a railway company that promoted a line between Wakefield and Doncaster, in Yorkshire, England. There was also a branch line connection from Adwick le Street to Stainforth, which gave access towards Grimsby. The company was promoted independently, but it was sponsored by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and the Great Northern Railway, and became jointly owned by them. The line opened in 1866. It was hugely beneficial to the GNR, shortening its route for express passenger trains from Doncaster to Leeds by twenty minutes, an outcome long sought by the GNR. For the MS&LR it gave a direct connection between the manufacturing districts of West Yorkshire and the docks at Grimsby. The line passed into the ownership of the London and North Eastern Railway at the "Grouping" of 1923. Brodsworth Colliery
Brodsworth Colliery was a coal mine north west of Doncaster and west of the Great North Road. in South Yorkshire, England. Two shafts were sunk between October 1905 and 1907 in a joint venture by the Hickleton Main Colliery Company and the Staveley Coal and Iron Company. The colliery exploited the coal seams of the South Yorkshire Coalfield including the Barnsley seam which was reached at a depth of 595 yards and was up to 9 feet thick. After a third shaft was sunk in 1923, Brodsworth, the largest colliery in Yorkshire, had the highest output of a three-shaft colliery in Britain. The colliery and five others were merged into Doncaster Amalgamated Collieries in 1937 and the National Coal Board in 1947. It closed in 1990. The colliery was consistently amongst those that employed the most miners in Britain, employing around 2,800 workers throughout the 1980s.
