The South Western Railway, also known as the South West Main Line, is the main railway route between Perth and Bunbury, Western Australia, Bunbury in Western Australia. History Construction The South Western Railway was constructed for the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) by various private contractors from 1891. Among these was the engineer and magistrate William W. L. Owen. Construction was completed in two parts. Bunbury Bridge
Bunbury Bridge was a single-track, timber railway bridge in East Perth, Western Australia, East Perth in Western Australia. The bridge crossed the Swan River (Western Australia), Swan River near Claise Brook and was built for passenger and freight traffic to Bunbury, Western Australia, Bunbury on the South Western Railway, Western Australia, South Western Railway. Pinjarra Railway Station
Pinjarra railway station is located on the South Western Railway in Western Australia. It is located at the town of Pinjarra. History Pinjarra station opened on 22 May 1893 as the interim terminus of the South Western Railway from Perth. On 22 August 1893, the line was extended to Bunbury. In 1911, Pinjarra became a junction station with the opening of the Pinjarra to Narrogin railway. Today this line is operated as a heritage railway by the Hotham Valley Railway, with its depot opposite Pinjarra station. In 1986, the station building was destroyed in a fire. A new building was erected in 2007 and today houses the Pinjarra Visitor Centre. Single track is usually found on lesser-used rail lines, often branch lines, where the level of traffic is not high enough to justify the cost of constructing and maintaining a second track. Passing Loop
A passing loop (UK usage) or passing siding (North America) (also called a crossing loop, crossing place, refuge loop or, colloquially, a hole) is a place on a single line railway or tramway, often located at or near a station, where trains or trams travelling in opposite directions can pass each other. Trains/trams going in the same direction can also overtake, provided that the signalling arrangement allows it. Old Bunbury Railway Station
The Old Bunbury railway station was the main railway station for Bunbury from 1894 until 1996. It was the terminus for the ''Australind'' passenger railway service from Perth. It was replaced in May 1985 by the current Bunbury Terminal in East Bunbury. History The original structure was constructed in the 1880s; the railway was not connected to Perth at that stage. On 14 November 1894, the first station opened as the terminus for the South Western Railway.
