South West Garo Hills District
Southwest Garo Hills is an administrative district in the State of Meghalaya, India. The Ampati Civil Sub-Division is upgraded to a full fledged district as South West Garo Hills, on 7 August 2012 with its headquarters at Ampati. It was inaugurated by Dr. Mukul Sangma, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, India. History and Creation The South West Garo Hills is carved out of present West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, India. The District comprises all the villages falling under the two Community and Rural Development Blocks, viz. West Garo Hills is an administrative district in Garo Hills of the state of Meghalaya in India. Tura town is the administrative headquarters of the district. The district occupies an area of 3714 km². In 2011 its population was 643,291. As of 2011 it is the second most populous district of Meghalaya (out of 7), after East Khasi Hills. West Garo Hills district is located at the westernmost part of Meghalaya. Dhubri
Dhubri (Pron: ˈdhubri) is an old town and headquarter of Dhubri district in Indian state of Assam. It is an old town on the bank of the Brahmaputra river, with historical significance. In 1883, the town was first constituted as a Municipal Board under the British regime. It is situated about west from Dispur, the state capital of Assam. Shamsul Hoque
Shamsul Hoque ( bn, শামসুল হক) was an Indian Bengali politician. He was the inaugural holder of the Mahendraganj constituency at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Life Hoque was born into a Bengali Muslim family in the village of Majherchar in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya. Despite being an independent candidate, he defeated Khelaram Barman of the Indian National Congress at the state's first ever elections, thus winning a seat at the Mahendraganj constituency of South West Garo Hills district. Among Hoque's contribution was the demand for the electrification of Mahendraganj. On 14 July 1974, the Border Security Force committed atrocities in Majherchar and surrounding villages. Hoque attempted to protect his constituents but was kidnapped by the Border Security Force and locked up in their nearby checkpoint. Local police managed to free Hoque the next day. Hajong Language
Hajong is an Indo-Aryan language with a possible Tibeto-Burman language substratum. It is spoken by approximately 80,000 ethnic Hajongs across the northeast of the Indian subcontinent, specifically in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and West Bengal in present-day India, and the divisions of Mymensingh and Sylhet in present-day Bangladesh.
