South Suburban Conference (Illinois)
The South Suburban Conference (SSC) is a high school athletic and activity conference which comprises fourteen schools located in the south and southwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. The conference was one of three (the Southwest Suburban Conference (SWSC) and Southland Athletic Conference) to be carved from the long extant South Inter-Conference Association (SICA); a large athletic conference which broke apart in 2005 after 33 years of existence. History The ''"original"'' incarnation of the South Suburban Conference dates back to 1927 when a group of six schools maintained ties from the original Suburban Conference which had folded that same year. Those original members included Bloom, Blue Island, Chicago University, Kankakee, Thornton Fractional and Thornton. The league continued to add schools as time moved forward with Argo joining in 1938 and Lockport in 1939. Illinois High School Association
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is an association that regulates competition of interscholastic sports and some interscholastic activities at the high school level for the state of Illinois. It is a charter member of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The IHSA regulates 14 sports for boys, 15 sports for girls, and eight co-educational non-athletic activities. More than 760 public and private high schools in the state of Illinois are members of the IHSA. The Association's offices are in Bloomington, Illinois. In its over 100 years of existence, the IHSA has been at the center of many controversies. Thornton Fractional South High School
Thornton Fractional Township South High School (TF South, TFS) is a high school located in Suburban Cook County, Illinois, located from the city limits of Chicago. The school serves an area of approximately , & serves over 2,000 students in grades 9-12 who reside in the near South Suburban communities of Lansing and Lynwood. Foundation Thornton Fractional South High School opened in 1958 and Thornton Fractional High School in Calumet City, which opened in 1926, was renamed to Thornton Fractional North High School. Lincoln-Way Community High School District
Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 is a school district in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. Created in 1951, the district serves the communities of New Lenox, Frankfort, Mokena, Manhattan, and small portions of Tinley Park, Orland Park and Homer Glen. The three schools comprising the district are Lincoln-Way Central High School, Lincoln-Way East High School, and Lincoln-Way West High School. A fourth high school, Lincoln-Way North High School, was closed at the end of the 2015–2016 school year as part of a deficit reduction plan. The South Inter-Conference Association is a former high school umbrella conference organizing extracurricular sporting activities in the southern portion of Cook, portions of Kendall and throughout Will and Kankakee Counties in Illinois. SICA is the predecessor competitive body of the current South Suburban Conference, Southwest Suburban Conference, and Southland Athletic Conference. At one point it was the largest conference in Illinois. Joliet West High School, along with Joliet Central, comprises district 204 Joliet Township High School district in Joliet, Illinois. West's mascot is the Tiger. Construction and expansion The school was originally constructed in 1964, one year after its identical sister school Joliet East, and has since been expanded four times. The first addition, completed in the early 1980s, added a bookstore to the cafeteria, additional space around the maintenance area, a multi-purpose room by the gymnasiums (primarily used for dance and wrestling), six additional classrooms, and a greenhouse. Joliet Central High School
Joliet Central High School is a public secondary school located in Joliet, Illinois. Central is part of Joliet Township High Schools, along with Joliet West and Joliet East (now defunct). Before the opening of Joliet East and West, the school was called Joliet Township High School. In 1993, when Joliet Central and Joliet West combined many of their athletic and other competitive extracurricular programs, the combined program took the old "Joliet Township" name. Building The original building was designed by architect Frank Shaver Allen in the "Collegiate Gothic" featuring arches, castellated walls, and towers. It was built in 1901 and expanded by the D. H.
