South Morang Railway Station (former)
South Morang was a steam-era railway station on the Whittlesea line, which operated until the closure of the line beyond Lalor station on 28 November 1959, following the electrification of the line to Lalor. The line to Epping station was electrified and re-opened on 30 November 1964, and the remaining section of track, from Epping to Whittlesea, was dismantled in the 1970s, although the former right-of-way remained intact. All that remained of the original South Morang station was the platform mound. A new South Morang station opened on 22 April 2012, at the terminus of an extension of the Epping line. The new station was two kilometres closer to Epping than the former station, being arguably in Mill Park or Epping. Mernda Railway Line
The Mernda railway line (previously the South Morang line, Epping line and Whittlesea line) is a commuter rail passenger train service in Melbourne, Australia. It operates between Flinders Street in the Melbourne central business district and Mernda through the northern suburbs including East Melbourne, Richmond, Abbotsford, Clifton Hill, Fitzroy North, Northcote, Preston, Reservoir, Thomastown, Lalor, Epping, South Morang and Mernda. The service is part of the Public Transport Victoria metropolitan rail network. Services on the line began in 1889 when the section between North Fitzroy (on the now closed Inner Circle line) and Reservoir was opened, which was extended to Whittlesea in the same year. The line was however closed beyond Lalor in November 1959, while the remainder of the line was electrified. Mernda, Victoria
Mernda is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 28 km north-east of Melbourne's central business district, located within the City of Whittlesea local government area. Mernda recorded a population of 23,369 at the 2021 census. History The first structure by European settlers was built in 1841 and bore the title of The Bridge Inn. That same year a small flour mill was built on the Plenty River. These town enterprises provided the nucleus of a village which was initially known as Morang. The Post Office opened on 19 February 1875 as Yan Yean. Situated near the Yan Yean Reservoir and Yan Yean, the popularity of the region for recreation led Morang citizens to press for a name change. A number of railway lines and stations which formed part of the greater Melbourne railway network have been closed over time, either in part or in full. The decision to close a railway station has historically been made by the department responsible for rail transport within the Government of Victoria. Over the history of the Melbourne railway network, a total of eleven complete railway lines, as well as 71 railway stations, have been closed. The most recent railway station to close is General Motors, which closed on 28 July 2002, due to a lack of pedestrian access; while the most recent railway line to close to traffic is the Port Melbourne railway line, which was closed on 11 October 1987, and was subsequently converted to light rail.
