South Lake-Lake Minneola Scenic Trail
South Lake Trail is a multi-use trail in Lake County, Florida. It is a slightly over 12.5-mile trail encompassing the Lake Minneola Scenic Trail and connecting to the 22-mile West Orange Trail. The trails form part of a planned Central Florida Loop. South Lake Trail is the largest in Lake County. The trail is hilly in parts. Lake County Route description Kilarney The South Lake Trail officially begins its westward journey slightly west of Kilarney Station. A short spur from Kilarney Station to South Lake Trail connects the West Orange Trail to the South Lake Trail. Lake County is a county in the central portion of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 383,956. Its county seat is Tavares, and its largest city is Clermont. Lake County is included in the Orlando-Kissimmee- Sanford, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Lake County was created in 1887 from portions of Sumter and Orange counties. It was named for the many lakes contained within its borders (250 named lakes and 1,735 other bodies of water). In the 1800s, the two main industries in the area were growing cotton and breeding cattle. In the latter part of the 19th century, people started to grow citrus trees. Citrus was introduced by Melton Haynes. Throughout the 1940s and 50s, citrus production increased and grew into the area's leading industry. West Orange Trail
The West Orange Trail is a long multi-use rail trail owned by Orange County Parks and Recreation in Orange County, Florida, in the United States. The paved trail passes through downtown Oakland, Winter Garden, and Apopka with most of its length built on old railroad alignments. To the west of the West Orange Trail is the South Lake-Lake Minneola Scenic Trail in Lake County which was connected to the trail in 2007. Stations There are four main stations on the West Orange Trail, each providing parking, restroom facilities, bike racks and drinking fountains. All have picnic tables and playground and some with concession stands. Bike and skates rental are available at the Killarney Station. The Chapin Station has a basketball court and tennis courts.
