South Korea At The 2018 Winter Olympics
South Korea competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, from 9 to 25 February 2018, as the host nation. It was represented by 122 competitors in all 15 disciplines (15 sports). In January 2018, following inter-governmental talks, the teams representing South Korea and North Korea entered the Opening Ceremony marching under the Korean Unification Flag, while in women's ice hockey there was a single united Korean team. South Korea won a total of seventeen medals – five gold, eight silver and four bronze – making these Games the most successful in South Korea's history in terms of total medals won, and earning the country 7th place in the overall medal table. Thirteen of the medals were won in long-track and short-track speed skating events. For the first time in their history, South Korean athletes also won medals in sliding sports (bobsleigh and skeleton), in a team event (curling) and in a snow event (snowboarding). Skeleton at the 2018 Winter Olympics was held at the Alpensia Sliding Centre near Pyeongchang, South Korea. The events were scheduled to take place between 15 and 17 February 2018. A total of two skeleton events were held, one each for men and women. Qualification A total of 50 quota spots were available to athletes to compete at the games. A maximum 30 men and 20 women could qualify. The qualification was based on 3 successive iterations of the world rankings of 14 January 2018. The women's 500 metres speed skating competition of the 2018 Winter Olympics was held on 18 February 2018 at Gangneung Oval in Gangneung. Speed Skating At The 2018 Winter Olympics – Men's Mass Start
The men's mass start speed skating competition of the 2018 Winter Olympics was held on 24 February 2018 at Gangneung Oval in Gangneung This was the first time the mass start has been introduced to the Olympics. The competition was held as a points race. Format There were 12 skaters in each semifinal. The eight best finishers from each of two semi-finals competed in the final. Each race consisted of 16 laps. Three leaders after last 16th lap received 60, 40 and 20 points respectively. Three intermediate sprints award points to the first three competitors (5 points, 3 points, 1 point) after 4th, 8th and 12th laps. Event rankings were based on points gained in sprints, then by finish time for athletes with equal points. Shim Suk-hee (Hangul: 심석희; ; born 30 January 1997) is a South Korean short track speed skater. She is a two-time Olympic Champion (2014, 2018) and a World Champion (2014). Early life At the age of 6, Shim started short track speed skating in her hometown Gangneung as a hobby with her older brother's influence. Her talent was obvious from her time since elementary school and led Shim's parents to fully support her short track career. Shim spent rest of her elementary school years in Seoul and joined the Junior National Team upon entering middle school.
