South Hills is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. Also known as Suidheuwels in Afrikaans, it is about 20 minutes drive from Johannesburg Central. It is located in Region F of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. History Prior to the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, the suburb lay on land on one of the original farms called ''Klipriviersberg''. It was originally called Welfare Park when it was established as a suburb on 23 September 1942. It obtained its current name in 1962, found in hills in the south of Johannesburg. South Hills Village is a two-level shopping mall located in the Pittsburgh suburbs of Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania, United States. History The mall was originally developed in the mid-1960s by the Oxford Development Co. as the first shopping complex in Greater Pittsburgh to be built as a fully enclosed structure. The Shoppes at South Hills, formerly South Hills Mall, is a shopping mall on U.S. 9, now converted into a strip mall, in the town of Poughkeepsie, New York. The 675,000 ft² plaza opened in 1974 and included two anchors, Sears and Kmart, at opposite ends of the mall. Currently, The Shoppes at South Hills are owned and operated by DLC Management Corporation. The mall is adjacent to its more successful rival, the Poughkeepsie Galleria, and the two properties are linked by a series of roads between the two properties. These roads pass directly in front of a Lowe's. situated on a plot between the Shoppes and the Galleria. The Galleria's existence led to the slow decline and eventual closing of South Hills Mall.
