South Downs West (European Parliament Constituency)
Prior to its uniform adoption of proportional representation in 1999, the United Kingdom used first-past-the-post for the European elections in England, Scotland and Wales. The European Parliament constituencies used under that system were smaller than the later regional constituencies and only had one Member of the European Parliament each. The constituency of South Downs West was one of them. It consisted of the Westminster Parliament constituencies (on their 1983 boundaries) of Arundel, Chichester, East Hampshire, Havant, Horsham, and South West Surrey. The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. The 1999 European Parliament election was the United Kingdom's part of the European Parliament election 1999. It was held on 10 June 1999. Following the European Parliamentary Elections Act 1999, it was the first European election to be held in the United Kingdom where the whole country used a system of proportional representation. In total, 87 Members of the European Parliament were elected from the United Kingdom across twelve new regional constituencies. The change in voting system resulted in significant changes in seats.
