South Channel, Malaysia
The Penang Strait is an 11 kilometre-wide strait that separates Penang Island from mainland Malay Peninsula. Penang Island is to the west of the channel, while Seberang Perai, the mainland half of the State of Penang, is to the east. The northern and southern ends of the channel join the Strait of Malacca, one of the world's busiest maritime routes. The strait provides deepwater passage to the Port of Penang, which is located in Butterworth in Seberang Perai. Batu Kawan ( Jawi: باتو كاون) is an island in the city of Seberang Perai, Penang, Malaysia. It is geographically separated from the rest of Seberang Perai by the Jawi and Tengah rivers. , Batu Kawan contained a population of 5,537. The Battle of Penang occurred on 28 October 1914, during World War I. It was a naval action in the Strait of Malacca, in which the German cruiser sank two Allied warships. Background At the time, Penang was part of the Straits Settlements, a British Crown colony. Penang is an island off the west coast of Malaya, now the present day Malaysia. Weld Quay, George Town
Weld Quay is a coastal road along the eastern shoreline of the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. One of a handful of places worldwide that was named after a Prime Minister of New Zealand, the road connects the Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu Expressway with Light Street and Beach Street in the heart of the city. Weld Quay was created as part of a massive land reclamation project in George Town in the late 19th century, which pushed the coastline further east. During the heyday of British rule, Weld Quay was home to the Port of Penang, which was then one of the major ports in Malaya. The famous Chinese Clan Jetties at the road was originally built to house the Chinese labourers employed at the harbour. The Penang Bridge is a dual carriageway toll bridge and controlled-access highway in the state of Penang, Malaysia. The Kerian River ( ms, Sungai Kerian), alternately ''Krian'', is a river in the northern part of the Malaysian state of Perak. The river originates from the Bintang Range. It flows westerly and discharges into the Strait of Malacca. The main tributaries are the Selama River, Ijok River, Samagagah River and Ulu Mengkuang River.
