South Carolina Superintendent Of Education
The South Carolina superintendent of education is the executive of the South Carolina Department of Education. The superintendent is responsible for overseeing the 1.5 billion dollar budget of the department and ensure that schools and schools districts are abiding by federal and state laws as well as the requirements established by the department. The superintendent is elected at-large and serves a term of four years. The position has no term limits. The current superintendent of education is Ellen Weaver, a Republican, who was elected in 2022 upon the retirement of Molly Spearman. Ellen Weaver
Ellen Weaver (born March 26, 1979) is a Republican Party (United States), Republican politician and former conservative think-tank leader who has served as South Carolina Superintendent of Education since January 11, 2023. She defeated fusion candidate and current educator Lisa Ellis (American politician), Lisa Ellis in the general election in November 2022. She is the former president and CEO of the Palmetto Promise Institute, a conservative think tank in South Carolina which supports public funding of private schools. Personal life Weaver graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. She worked for United States Senator, Senator Jim DeMint. Jim Rex
Jim Rex (born November 21, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio) was the 16th South Carolina Superintendent of Education. He ran for the position in 2006 as a South Carolina Democratic Party, Democrat, against Karen Floyd, a South Carolina Republican Party, Republican. Rex defeated Floyd by only 455 votes, the closest margin of victory in a statewide election in South Carolina's history. He was sworn in as superintendent on January 10, 2007, replacing fellow Democrat Inez Tenenbaum. In 2014, Rex co-founded a new political party – the American Party of South Carolina. Inez Tenenbaum
Inez Moore Tenenbaum (born March 8, 1951) is an American lawyer and politician who served as South Carolina Superintendent of Education and as Chair of the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. In 2016 she joined a law firm. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Education Tenenbaum was born in Hawkinsville, Georgia, obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1972 from the University of Georgia, and a Master's in Education two years later from the same university. Asbury Coward
Asbury Coward (September 19, 1835 - April 28, 1925) was a school leader, Confederate Army officer, South Carolina Superintendent of Education, and Superintendent of The Citadel. He was born on the Quenby Plantation outside Charleston, South Carolina, and graduated from South Carolina Military Academy (now The Citadel) in 1854. He and classmate Micah Jenkins established the King's Mountain Military School in Yorkville in 1855. It closed at the start of the American Civil War. It reopened after the war but the boarding school struggled with the challenging times and closed. During the Civil War, Coward was commissioned as a colonel and served under General James Longstreet in Tennessee and Georgia.
