South Bronx Greenway
The South Bronx Greenway is a project to improve waterfront access, recreational facilities, and transportation systems, including pedestrian and bicycle paths, in the South Bronx in New York City. Early planning The project was first envisioned by Majora Carter of The Point Community Development Corporation in the late 1990s as part of a $1.25 million federal transportation grant application. It was formally proposed in the Hunts Point Vision Plan of 2004 and announced by Michael Bloomberg in 2006. In 2014, it was estimated that the total project cost would be $48 million. By 2012, enough of the greenway had been built that ''New York'' magazine described it as "transformative". A three year, $300,000 grant by the Barry Segal Family Foundation funded two Greenway Steward positions. South Bronx
The South Bronx is an area of the New York City Borough (New York City), borough of the Bronx. The area comprises neighborhoods in the southern part of the Bronx, such as Concourse, Bronx, Concourse, Mott Haven, Bronx, Mott Haven, Melrose, Bronx, Melrose, and Port Morris, Bronx, Port Morris. In the early 1900s, the South Bronx was originally known as the Manor of Morrisania, as it was the manor of Lewis Morris (governor), Lewis Morris. Bronx Kill
The Bronx Kill is a narrow strait in New York City delineating the southernmost extent of the Bronx. It separates the Bronx from Randalls Island. It connects the Harlem River to the East River. History Originally, the Bronx Kill was a sizeable waterway, approximately in width. As of 1917, there were also plans by the War Department to dredge a deep channel, in width, to improve navigation and reduce tidal currents. For this reason, in the early 20th century the New York Connecting Railroad built a movable bridge across the Bronx Kill on the approach to the Hell Gate Bridge.
