South Australian Railways 750 Class
The South Australian Railways 750 class was a class of 2-8-2 steam locomotives operated by the South Australian Railways. History With an acute shortage of motive power following World War II, the South Australian Railways were able to purchase 10 Victorian Railways N class locomotives in 1951 which had been in service for only a few months. They replaced Rx class locomotives on branch line services particularly over the light lines in the Murray Mallee radiating from Tailem Bend. Withdrawals began in July 1961 with the last withdrawn in September 1967. 752 is the sole survivor of the class, being placed in the Mile End Railway Museum in April 1967. It was later moved to the Port Dock Railway Museum (now the National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide) in 1988. Tailem Bend Railway Station
Tailem Bend railway station is located on the Adelaide-Wolseley line in Tailem Bend, South Australia. It is also the junction point for the Loxton and Pinnaroo lines. History Tailem Bend station opened on 1 May 1886 as a station on the Nairne- Bordertown extension of what became the Adelaide-Wolseley line. It became a junction station with the Pinnaroo line constructed in 1906 and the Brown's Well line in 1913. The Brown's Well line was eventually extended to Barmera in 1928, and had several branches with trains that operated back to Tailem Bend. Trains on the Peebinga, Loxton, Moorook and Waikerie lines all passed through Tailem Bend. All were built as broad gauge lines. The current station was opened on 7 October 1913. Murray Mallee
The Murray Mallee is the grain-growing and sheep-farming area of South Australia bounded to the north and west by the Murray River (in South Australia, "River Murray"), to the east by the Victorian border, and extending about 50 km south of the Mallee Highway. The Murray Mallee area is predominantly a vast plain of low elevation, with sandhills and gentle undulating sandy rises, interspersed by flats. The annual rainfall ranges from approximately 250 mm in the north to 400 mm further south. The area was very lightly populated up until the beginning of the 20th century, with marginal pastoral runs of sheep at low stocking rates. Artesian water was discovered at moderate depth, and railways opened to make shipping of grain feasible. The South Australian Railways R class engine, later upgraded to Rx Class engine is a class of 4-6-0 steam engines operated by the South Australian Railways. History In 1886, Dübs and Company of Glasgow delivered the first six R class of engine. A further 24 engines had been built by James Martin & Co by November 1895. From 1899, all engines were rebuilt with higher powered Belpaire boilers and reclassified as the Rx class engine. A further 54 locomotives were built as Rx class by the Islington Railway Workshops, North British Locomotive Company and Walkers Limited with all engines in service by May 1916. The North British Locomotive Company (NBL, NB Loco or North British) was created in 1903 through the merger of three Glasgow locomotive manufacturing companies; Sharp, Stewart and Company (Atlas Works), Neilson, Reid and Company (Hyde Park Works) and Dübs and Company (Queens Park Works), creating the largest locomotive manufacturing company in Europe and the British Empire.
