South African Naval Museum
The South African Naval Museum is a maritime museum in Simon's Town, South Africa. It contains collections and artefacts related to the maritime history of South Africa and the South African Navy. History The South African Naval Museum at the South African Navy's base in Simon's Town dates back to 1966 when a naval historical collection was displayed at the Castle of Good Hope Military Museum in Cape Town. In the mid 1970s this collection was transferred to the Martello Tower in Simon's Town and, thereafter, to Fort Wynyard where it was enlarged to include a much wider display of naval associated artifacts. With the decentralisation of Museums from the former South African Defence Forces Director Military Museums to the various Arms of Service in June 1987, the South African Navy Museum (Martello Tower) was transferred to the functional control of the South African Navy, while Fort Wynyard was transferred to Western Province Command (Army). Air Force Base Ysterplaat is an airbase of the South African Air Force. It is located in Cape Town suburb Ysterplaat, on the southwestern coast of South Africa. Daphne (; ; el, Δάφνη, , ), a minor figure in Greek mythology, is a naiad, a variety of female nymph associated with fountains, wells, springs, streams, brooks and other bodies of freshwater. SAS Assegaai
SAS ''Assegaai'', formerly known as SAS ''Johanna van der Merwe'', was a of the South African Navy. Decommissioned in 2003, SAS ''Assegaai'' is the only one of the former three ''Daphné''-class submarines to have been retained for preservation as a museum boat, the other two have been cut up and sold for scrap. Cape Corps
The Cape Corps and its predecessor units were the main military organisations in which the Coloured members of South Africa's population served. Job Maseko
Job Maseko was a South African soldier during World War II, serving in the Native Military Corps as part of the South African 2nd Infantry Division. He was one of many Allied troops captured by the Axis in the surrender of the port of Tobruk in 1942. He gained fame by his actions in sinking a German vessel with a milk can whilst serving as a POW stevedore in Tobruk harbour, for which he was awarded the Military Medal. Before the War Before the war, Maseko worked as a miner in Springs South Africa. After completion of basic training, he was sent to North Africa to join the 2nd South African Division. Surrender and sabotage Maseko became a prisoner of war on 21 June 1942 when Major-General Hendrik Klopper, commander of the South African 2nd Infantry Division surrendered the Tobruk Garrison with 32,000 men to Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. Azanian People's Liberation Army
The Azanian People's Liberation Army (APLA), formerly known as Poqo, was the military wing of the Pan Africanist Congress, an African nationalist movement in South Africa. In the Xhosa language, the word 'Poqo' means 'pure'. After attacks on and the murder of several white families the APLA was subsequently classified as a terrorist organisation by the South African National government and the United States, and banned. APLA was disbanded and integrated into the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in June 1994. Refiloe Johannes Mudimu
Vice Admiral Refiloe Mudimu is a former South African military commander, who served as the Chief of the Navy before his retirement in 2014. Early life Johannes Mudimu was born on 6 March 1954, in Sophiatown. He became a member of the African National Congress and Umkhonto We Sizwe (MK) in 1975. Early career Mudimu received his military training in Angola, East Germany and the then USSR. He successfully completed the commander's course in 1977. He then served as an instructor in MK camps until 1979 when he was deployed as Chief of Logistics in Luanda, Angola. Mudimu later served in ANC Headquarters in Lusaka, Zambia as the co-ordinator of the ANC Youth Radio Programs as well as a member of the editorial board of the Youth Publications.
