The South African Railways Class 3B 4-8-2 of 1912 was a steam locomotive. In 1912, the South African Railways took delivery of ten Class 3B steam locomotives with a 4-8-2 Mountain type wheel arrangement which had been ordered by the Natal Government Railways the year before.Espitalier, T.J.; Day, W.A.J. Natal Government Railways
The Natal Government Railways (NGR) was formed in January 1877 in the Colony of Natal. In 1877, the Natal Government Railways acquired the Natal Railway Company for the sum of £40,000, gaining the line from the Point to Durban and from Durban to Umgeni. This move, inspired in part by the neighbouring Cape Prime Minister John Molteno's 1873 establishment of the Cape Government Railways, was intended to drive the extension of Natal's railways inland, towards the Drakensberg and eventually the Orange Free State. The Natal Government Railways also adopted the Cape gauge. The core line went from Durban to Volksrust, but reached Charlestown ( from the border of the South African Republic) in 1891 and was linked to the Witwatersrand in 1895. The South African Railways Class 3A 4-8-2 of 1910 was a steam locomotive from the pre- Union era in the Colony of Natal. Early in 1910, the Natal Government Railways commissioned a single American-built Mountain type locomotive, also known as the ''America D''. It was the first superheated locomotive to be acquired by the Railways in Natal and also the first with a bar frame. Komati Power Station
Komati Power Station, is a coal-fired power plant operated by Eskom. Its 300 metre tall chimney was built in 1979, and is one of the tallest structures in the country. Komati is one of power stations with a common steam range, meaning that its nine boilers jointly feed the nine generators. Other stations are Tutuka Power Station and Matimba Power Station. History The first unit was commissioned in 1961 and the last in 1966. In 1988, three units at Komati were mothballed, one was kept in reserve and the other five were only operated during peak hours. In 1990, the complete station was mothballed until 2008 when the unit 9 was the first to be recommissioned under Eskom's return-to-service project. The full station was put online in 2011. It was finally decommissioned on 31 October 2022. South African National Railway And Steam Museum
South African National Railway And Steam Museum (SANRASM) was meant to be the national railway museum authority of South Africa, by the original initiative of the RailRoad Association of South Africa (RRA) and then transport authority South African Railways and Harbours. SANRASM has three sites around the Krugersdorp and Randfontein area. The Johannesburg site used to have a collection of approximately 90 steam engine locomotives, the largest museum of its kind in South Africa. The diverse collection of vehicles and artifacts cover photographs depicting the use of locomotives during the Boer War, to the last of the scheduled steam trains in 2007. The museum also coordinates trips on the Magaliesburg Express Fun Train. Buffer Beam
A headstock of a rail vehicle is a transverse structural member located at the extreme end of the vehicle's underframe. The headstock supports the coupling at that end of the vehicle, and may also support buffers, in which case it may also be known as a buffer beam. The headstocks form part of the underframe of a locomotive or a railroad car. The headstocks of locomotives, railcars and cabcars also support headlamps and the hoses for air brakes, vacuum brakes as well as the cables for train control and head end power. Length over headstocks A commonly used measurement relating to a rail vehicle is its length over headstocks, which is the length of the vehicle excluding its couplings or buffers (if any).
