Souris is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Souris – Glenwood within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held town status prior to January 1, 2015 (2016 population: 1,876). It is located within the municipality at the confluence of Plum Creek and Souris River, from which it takes its name. Before 1882, the town was called Plum Creek. The community is home to Canada's longest historic cable-stayed footbridge (), known as the Swinging Bridge, which spans the Souris River that divides the community. The Swinging Bridge was built in 1904 as a means of transportation over the Souris River. Residents of Souris are referred to as Sourisites. Souris is a town in Kings County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is located near the northeastern tip of the province. History Souris was founded by Acadians in 1727 as a fishing settlement at the mouth of the Souris River. These early settlers experienced several plagues of field mice in the surrounding area during the 1720s-1760s which damaged crops. Souris is French for "mouse" and a mouse is the Town's Mascot. It is said that "a French vessel passing by the bay in the early 1700s was forced to cut through the waves of drowned mice and so gave the name to the area. The 1744 map of Sieur de la Roque names the bay, Havre a la Souris”. Earlier names also included: Colville Bay, Grand Haven, New Bristol, and Red Cliffs. The name likely also shares similar roots with the Souriquois and the Souris River. Souris River
The Souris River (; french: rivière Souris) or Mouse River (as it is alternatively known in the U.S., a calque of its French name) is a river in central North America. It is about in length and drains about . It rises in the Yellow Grass Marshes north of Weyburn, Saskatchewan. It wanders south through North Dakota beyond Minot to its most southern point at the city of Velva, and then back north into Manitoba. The river passes through the communities of Melita, Hartney, Souris and Wawanesa and on to its confluence with the Assiniboine River near Treesbank, about southeast of Brandon. The main tributaries which flow into the Souris in Manitoba are the Antler River, the Gainsborough, and Plum Creeks. André Souris
André Souris (; 10 July 1899 – 12 February 1970) was a Belgian composer, conductor, musicologist, and writer associated with the surrealist movement. Biography Souris was born in Marchienne-au-Pont, Belgium, and studied at the Conservatory in Brussels from 1911 to 1918, winning first prizes in music history (1915), harmony (1916), counterpoint and fugue (1917), and the violin (1918). Following postgraduate studies in composition and orchestration with Gilson, he won the Rubens prize in 1927. This enabled him to move to Paris, where he sought out the leaders of the avant garde. He took conducting lessons with Scherchen in 1935, and was a conductor for the Belgian radio from 1937 to 1946 . Up until 1923 Souris composed a great deal of music under the strong influence of Claude Debussy, but after discovering other musical styles at the Pro Arte Concerts, he repudiated these early works and adopted Erik Satie and Igor Stravinsky as his models. Theodore Souris
Theodore Souris (August 25, 1925 – June 21, 2002) was an American jurist and lawyer. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Souris served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. In 1947, Souris received his bachelor's degree from University of Michigan and in 1949, he received his law degree from University of Michigan Law School. He then practiced law in Detroit, Michigan. He served as general counsel, in 1950 and 1951 for Philip A. Hart when Hart was district director for the United States Office of Price Stabilization. In 1959, Souris was appointed Wayne County, Michigan Circuit Court judge. Souris then served on the Michigan Supreme Court from 1960 until 1969.
