''The Staircase'' (french: Soupçons, lit, 'Suspicions'; also known as ''Death on the Staircase'') is a 2004 French-produced, English-language documentary television miniseries directed by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade about the trial of Michael Peterson, convicted of murdering his wife, Kathleen Peterson. Following from de Lestrade's Oscar-winning '' Murder on a Sunday Morning'', filming began soon after Peterson's indictment. Camera crews were given access to the accused's extended family, the defense attorneys, and the courtroom. An abbreviated version was broadcast as a special two-hour presentation of American news show '' Primetime Thursday'' on July 22, 2004. The miniseries was completed in September 2004, and premiered in October on Canal+, from January 10–14, 2005, on BBC Four (as part of its '' Storyville'' documentary series), and from April 4–25 on Sundance Channel. Jean-Xavier De Lestrade
Jean-Xavier de Lestrade (born 1 July 1963) is a French writer, director and Film producer, producer of films and television series. Early life and education Lestrade was born in Mirande, Gers, in southwestern France. He studied law and journalism in Paris, and turned to making documentaries which scrutinize the mechanisms of society. Career Lestrade won an Academy Awards, Oscar for Best Documentary for his ninth feature, ''Murder on a Sunday Morning'', in 2001. He is also known for his film ''The Staircase'', about the murder trial against author Michael Peterson (author and convicted criminal), Michael Peterson, who was accused of killing his wife. He is an executive producer for the TV series ''Sin City Law'' (2007), which has been shown on the Sundance Channel (United States), Sundance Channel in the US. Michael Peterson (criminal)
Michael Iver Peterson (born October 23, 1943) is an American novelist who was convicted in 2003 of murdering his second wife, Kathleen Peterson, on December 9, 2001. After eight years, Peterson was granted a new trial after the judge ruled a critical prosecution witness gave misleading testimony. In 2017, Peterson submitted an Alford plea to the reduced charge of manslaughter. He was sentenced to time already served and freed. Peterson's case is the subject of the French documentary miniseries '' The Staircase'', which started filming soon after his arrest in 2001 and followed events until his eventual Alford plea in 2017. In 2019, he released his own account of his life since his wife's death in an independently published memoir, ''Behind the Staircase''. '' The Staircase'', a 2022 miniseries featuring Colin Firth and Toni Collette, also takes this murder case as its subject. The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is the world's largest documentary film festival held annually since 1988 in Amsterdam. Over a period of twelve days, it has screened more than 300 films and sold more than 250,000 tickets. Visitors to the festival have increased from 65,000 in 2000 to 285,000 in 2018. Stroke
A stroke is a medical condition in which poor blood flow to the brain causes cell death. There are two main types of stroke: ischemic, due to lack of blood flow, and hemorrhagic, due to bleeding.
