Sotavento Region is one of the regions of Veracruz, Mexico. Geography Sotavento Region lies on the southern Gulf Coastal Plain. ''Sotavento'' means leeward, and the region lies in the rain shadow of the coastal Sierra de Chiconquiaco, which makes it drier than the rest of Veracruz' coastal lowlands to the north and south. Xalapa
Xalapa or Jalapa (, ), officially Xalapa-Enríquez (), is the capital city of the Mexican state of Veracruz and the name of the surrounding municipality. In the 2005 census the city reported a population of 387,879 and the municipality of which it serves as municipal seat reported a population of 413,136. The municipality has an area of 118.45 km2. Sierra De Chiconquiaco
The Sierra de Chiconquiaco is a coastal mountain range in Veracruz state of eastern Mexico. Geography The Sierra extends generally east–west. It is bounded on the north by the plain of the Nautla River, which empties eastwards into the Gulf of Mexico. On the west the canyon of the Bobos River, a northward-flowing tributary of the Nautla, separates the Sierra from the eastern end of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. On the northeast and east a narrow portion of the Gulf Coastal Plain lies between the Sierra and the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf Coastal Plain extends around the Gulf of Mexico in the Southern United States and eastern Mexico.
