Sostratos Of Aegina
Sostratos of Aegina ( el, Σώστρατος ὁ Αιγινήτης), son of Laodamus, is reported by Herodotus as a famous merchant in the sixth century BC Hellenic world - indeed to have gained "the biggest profit any Greek trader we have reliable information about has ever made from his cargo". Veracity of Herodotus's account The veracity of Herodotus has often been challenged, both in ancient and modern times, and the instance of his casual reference to Sostratus as a well known presence is something of a test case. A previously otherwise unknown and perhaps legendary figure, Sostratus has received increasing validation from modern archeology. A stone anchor dedicated to Apollo at Gravisca (the port of the Etruscan city of Tarquinii) is for example thought to have been dedicated by Sostratos: it can now be seen at the museum there. The names of Sostratus and Laodamus – perhaps his grandfather and father – have been found in Egypt, supporting the view of his coming from a ...

Sostratos Of Chios
Sostratos of Chios () was an ancient Greek sculptor from the island of Chios, who was active around the middle of the 5th century BC. Biography One of his artistic creations was a great bronze statue depicting Athena, which he made it in collaboration with Hypatodorus for the city of Alifeira in the ancient region of Arcadia (but in the modern Andritsaina-Krestena municipality in Elis regional unit of Greece). That statue is mentioned by Pausanias (''Description of Greece'', Book VIII, 8.26.7) and Polybius (Histories, IV, 4.78.5). Greek historian Polybius writes: "... arrived at Alipheira Aliphera ( grc, Ἀλίφηρα) or Alipheira (Ἀλίφειρα) was a town of ancient Arcadia, in the district Parrhasia (Arcadia), Parrhasia, said to have been built by Alipherus, a son of Lycaon (king of Arcadia), Lycaon. Sostratus Of Cnidus
Sostratus of Cnidus (; grc-gre, Σώστρατος ὁ Κνίδος; born 3rd century BC), was a Greek architect and engineer. He is said to have designed the lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (c. 280 BC), on the island of Pharos off Alexandria, Egypt. This claim is disputed. Strabo writes that the lighthouse was dedicated and presumably funded by Sostratus, a friend of Egypt's ruler, Ptolemy.
