Sorin Oprescu
Sorin Mircea Oprescu (; born 7 November 1951) is a Romanian independent politician and medical doctor who previously served as Mayor of Bucharest between 2008 and 2015. Political activity Oprescu first ran for Mayor of Bucharest in 1998 backed by the Party of Social Democracy in Romania (PDSR), the precursor to the modern-day Social Democratic Party (PSD). He was eliminated in the first round with 19.3% of the vote, losing to incumbent Viorel Lis who was supported by the Christian Democratic National Peasants' Party (PNȚ-CD). He ran again in 2000, achieving the highest first-round total (40.12%) but losing in the second round with 49.31% to winner Traian Băsescu's 50.69%. He was one of the independent candidates running for President of Romania in the presidential election which took place on 22 November 2009. Mayor Of Bucharest
The Mayor of Bucharest ( ro, Primarul General al Municipiului București), sometimes known as the General Mayor, is the head of the Bucharest City Hall in Bucharest, Romania, which is responsible for citywide affairs, such as the water system, the transport system and the main boulevards. The title of General Mayor is sometimes used to distinguish the office from that of the mayors that lead each of Bucharest's six administrative sectors, and which are responsible for local area affairs, such as secondary streets, parks, schools and cleaning services. All decisions of the mayor have to be approved by the 55-seat General Council of Bucharest. The office was created on 7 August 1864, when a new French-style local administration law was adopted. Social Liberal Union
The Social Liberal Union ( ro, Uniunea Social Liberală, USL) was a grand coalition of several political parties in Romania. The alliance contained two major centre-left and centre-right parties, more specifically the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the National Liberal Party (PNL). History Formation The USL was formed on 5 February 2011 initially between the Social Democratic Party (PSD), and the Centre Right Alliance (ACD) of National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Conservative Party (PC). 2012 elections In June 2012, the USL won the local elections by a landslide. 2012 Romanian Local Elections
Local elections were held in Romania on 10 June 2012. The Government initially tried to postpone the election to be on the same day with the 2012 Romanian legislative election, but a ruling of the Constitutional court made that option impossible. As of June 2011, a law was passed by the parliament, and promulgated by the president, in which the mayors and the presidents of the County Councils will be elected with in a First Past the Post system. Social Democratic Pole Of Romania
The Social Democratic Pole of Romania ( ro, Polul Democrat-Social din România, PDSR) was an electoral alliance in Romania ruling from 2000 to 2004 in a coalition government. History Formation It was founded by the Party of Social Democracy in Romania (PDSR), and of two smaller parties, the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSDR) and the Humanist Party of Romania (PUR). 2000 legislative election In the 2000 legislative election, they gained 155 of 346 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, and 65 of 143 seats in the Senate. In 2001, the PDSR and PSDR merged into the Social Democratic Party (PSD). Marian Vanghelie
Daniel Marian Vanghelie (born 1968 in Bucharest, Romania) is a Romanian politician, the former mayor of the 5th Sector of Bucharest (2000–2016) and a former member of the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD). He ran for a fifth term in 2016 as an independent but was defeated by social-democratic candidate Daniel Florea. Vanghelie came in 3rd place, receiving fewer votes than both the social democratic candidate and the liberal candidate, Ovidiu Raețchi. Due to allegations of corruption made against him by the Romanian ''PNA'', Vanghelie was excluded from the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD) before the Bucharest 2004 local elections. Running at the time as an independent candidate, Vanghelie was the only of the six Bucharest district mayors to win from the first round, at a comfortable 27% margin.
