Wesley Ruggles
Wesley Ruggles (June 11, 1889 – January 8, 1972) was an American film director. Life and work He was born in Los Angeles, California, younger brother of actor Charlie Ruggles. He began his career in 1915 as an actor, appearing in a dozen or so silent films, on occasion with Charlie Chaplin. In 1917, he turned his attention to directing, making more than 50 films—including a silent version of Edith Wharton's novel ''The Age of Innocence'' (1924)—before he won acclaim with '' Cimarron'' in 1931. The adaptation of Edna Ferber's novel '' Cimarron'', about homesteaders settling in the prairies of Oklahoma, was the first Western to win an Oscar as Best Picture. Katherine Perry (January 5, 1897 – October 14, 1983), also known as Kathryn Perry, was an American stage and film actress. She appeared in 37 films between 1920 and 1936. Biography Katherine Perry was born on January 5, 1897. Although she spent a brief time in a private school, the bulk of Perry's education came in public schools. Before she became an actress, Perry worked as a model. She was in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1911, 1917, 1918, 1919, and the more risqué Midnight Frolic show in 1918. Apart from the Follies, she also acted on Broadway in ''(From) Broadway to Paris'', which ran from November 1912 to January 1913, ''The Passing Show of 1913'', ''Robinson Crusoe, Jr.'' (1916), ''The Century Girl'' (1916-1917), and ''Miss 1917''. Marie Burke (born Marie Rosa Altfuldisch, later Holt, 18 October 189421 March 1988) was an English actress of stage, cinema and television. She appeared in over 40 films between 1917 and 1971, and appeared in TV series between 1953 and 1969. Biography Burke was born in London in 1894 to Rosa (née Underwood) and Ferdinand Altfuldisch (sometimes transcribed as Altfieldisch). The family changed their name to Holt during World War I. Career Marie Burke was a British character comedian and trained as an operatic singer in Italy. She appeared in films in 1917, before making her stage debut in 1919. As a member of the Katja Company she was touring Australia in 1926 when she and her colleague, the tenor Warde Morgan, were seriously injured in the Aberdeen Rail Disaster. She met and married British operatic tenor Thomas Burke when they were both studying singing in Milan. They had one daughter, the actress and singer Patricia Burke, who was born in Milan.John D.
