Sookmyung Women’s University () is a private university in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Founded in 1906, Sookmyung is Korea’s first royal private educational institution for women. The university's name is derived from the Hanja characters of ''sook'' and ''Myung'', which mean "elegant" and "bright" respectively. With its more than a century-long legacy and history, Sookmyung is renowned as one of the best women's universities nationwide. According to JoongAng Daily's 2018 university rankings, it has been ranked as the second-best women's university in Korea and is ranked nr. 20 on South Korea's list of best universities. Sookmyung Women's University has distinguished alumni in media, journalism, politics, governments, and academia. It has a highly acclaimed ROTC program. Yongsan District (, ) is one of the 25 List of districts of Seoul, districts of Seoul, South Korea. Sookmyung Girls' High School () is a private girls high school located in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea. History Sookmyung Girls' High School was founded on May 22, 1906 under the name Myeongsin Girls' School (hangul: 명신여학교; hanja: 明 新女 學校), and was originally located in Yongdonggung palace. Sookmyung Gayageum Orchestra
The Sookmyung Gayageum Orchestra ( ko, 숙명여대 가야금 연주단) is a musical ensemble from South Korea. It was formed in 1999 by music students at Sookmyung Women's University. The ensemble comprises up to 24 ''gayageum'', often accompanied by Korean and Western percussion instruments. The group is often led by a conductor, and its performances sometimes features soloists on instruments such as the ''haegeum'', as well as a cappella groups and breakdance groups such as Last For One. Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum
The Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum () is a textile museum in Seoul, South Korea. It was founded by Dr. Young Yang Chung and inaugurated in May 2004 by Sookmyung Women's University. It was closed for renovation in December 2017. It is expected to reopen in September 2019. Imperial Noble Consort Sunheon of the Yeongwol Eom clan (2 February 1854 – 20 July 1911) (순헌황귀비 엄씨) was a consort of the Korean king and emperor Gojong of Korea, Gojong. She was given the posthumous title of Sunheon Hwang-Gwi-bi "Sunheon, Imperial Concubine of the Highest Rank". Her personal name was Eom Seon-yeong (엄선영, 嚴善英). Life Early life Eom Seon-yeong was born into the Yeongwol Eom clan on 2 February 1854 to Eom Jin-sam and his wife, Lady Park of the Miryang Park clan. She was the eldest daughter and third child of five children. Her father served as an officer at Changdeokgung, Changdeok Palace during the early years of King Gojong's reign.
