Sonya Harper
Sonya Harper is a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives. Since her October 20, 2015 appointment to replace the late Esther Golar, she has represented the 6th district, which includes all or portions of Armour Square, Bridgeport, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, McKinley Park, New City and West Englewood in the City of Chicago. Harper is the Joint Chair of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus. In 2017, Sonya Harper was named by J.B. Pritzker a member of the Pritzker's Agriculture Transition Committee. Esther Golar
Esther P. Golar (April 16, 1944 – September 21, 2015) was a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing the 6th District since her appointment in 2006. She served until her death on September 21, 2015. Early life Born in Merigold, Mississippi, Golar moved with her family to Chicago, Illinois in 1950. She went to Crane Technical High School and Malcolm X College. Before her appointment to the Illinois General Assembly, Golar worked as a civilian employee of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy. She was also a board secretary of the Neighborhood Housing Services for nine years. State Representative Golar was appointed to her position as state representative after Patricia Bailey was forced to resign. Bailey was convicted for election fraud and perjury. ''The State Journal-Register'' is the only local daily newspaper for Springfield, Illinois, and its surrounding area. It was founded in 1831 as the ''Sangamo Journal'' by William Bailhache and Edward Baker, and describes itself as "the oldest newspaper in Illinois". As such, it and its editor, Edward L. Baker, supported the political career of the Springfield-based Abraham Lincoln in the years before the American Civil War; in fact, it was in the ''Journal''s office that Lincoln and his friends waited for the telegraphic news from Chicago to find out who would be the Republican presidential nominee in 1860.
