Sonya Apa Temata
Sonya Apa Temata is a takataapui human rights activist and nurse of Cook Islander, Māori and Tahitian descent. She specialises in advocacy for the LGBT+ community in Oceania. She has spoken out about how the criminalisation of gay men is a legacy of British colonialism in the Pacific. ''Takatāpui'' (also spelled ''takataapui'') is a Te Reo Māori (Māori language) term, which is used in a similar way to LGBTQI+. ''Takatāpui'' can also refer to an individual who is SOGIE diverse. When speaking te reo Māori, LGBTQI+ people of any culture are referred to as Takatāpui. The Te Tiare Association (TTA) is the LGBTQ+ advocacy organisation in the Cook Islands. It works to celebrate the country's 'akava'ine, akatututane and LGBT communities. Background The Te Tiare Association Inc. (TTA) was formally incorporated on 30 November 2007 at the Rarotonga High Court. It is an organisation established to bring together 'akava'ine in the Cook Islands for education and advocacy purposes. On 21 June 2008 the Te Tiare Association was officially launched as part of a partnership with the Pacific Islands Aids Foundation. It is the only LGBTQ+ advisory group in the Cook Islands. The Auckland Pride Festival is an annual festival held in Auckland, New Zealand. It began in 2013 and is New Zealand's largest Pride Festival. The festival has also brings together a number of other queer and queer supporting festivals and events in Auckland. They include the Same But Different Festival, Auckland Council's Proud Centres, Ending HIV NZ Big Gay Out, F.I.N.E Festival, Heroic Gardens (until 2019), and Bear Week New Zealand (until 2019). Cook Islanders are residents of the Cook Islands, which is composed of 15 islands and atolls in Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean.
