Sonsón is a municipality in the Colombian department of Antioquia. Sonsón is located in Eastern Antioquia. It is one of the seats of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sonsón–Rionegro. Sonsón celebrates "Las Fiestas Del Maíz"- ('Festival of the Corn') during the month of August, being the most traditional, historical and representative festival in western Colombia. History Founded on 4 August 1800 by Mr. José Joaquín Ruiz y Zapata, villager judge from the city of Arma de Rionegro, with seventy-seven people. Initially it was called San José de Ezpeleta de Sonsón in honor of the patron San José ( Saint Joseph) and the viceroy Ezpeleta. During the firsts decades of the 19th century, Sonsón became in the provider center of the colonization towards the Colombian west, being a very important financial and commercial hub in the Antioquian region, and also being for several years the second city of the Department. Our Lady of Chiquinquirá Cathedral ( es, Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá) is a Roman Catholic cathedral situated in the city of Sonsón, Colombia. The present cathedral was built to replace the original destroyed by an earthquake in 1962. History The Our Lady of Chiquinquirá Cathedral, also called Sonsón Cathedral, is a Catholic cathedral under the patronage of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá. The church is situated on the side of the main square (Ruiz Zapata) of the municipality and city of Sonsón, Antioquia, Colombia. It is one of the bishoprics of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sonsón–Rionegro, together with the co-Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Great, and the Marian shrine in Rionegro. Eastern Antioquia ( es, Oriente Antioqueño) is subregion of the Colombian Department of Antioquia. The region consists of 23 municipalities. Rionegro
Rionegro () is a city and Municipalities of Colombia, municipality in Antioquia Department, Colombia, located in the subregion of Eastern Antioquia. The official name of the city is "Ciudad Santiago de Arma de Rionegro". Rio Negro means "Black River" in Spanish, as the city received its name after a river that looks black because of the shadows cast by trees. The river traverses the city and it is the most prominent geographical feature of the municipality.
