Sonsbeek
Sonsbeek is an outdoor sculpture exhibition founded in 1949, that takes place intermittently in Park Sonsbeek in Arnhem, the Netherlands. It was originally meant to be a biennial exhibition, however it occurs on an irregular schedule. Sonsbeek was initiated in an attempt to repair the heavy damage the city had suffered during the Battle of Arnhem during the Second World War. The 1949 inaugural exhibition featured over 200 sculptures that were installed along the park's pathways. It was attended by over 100,000 visitors. The first instalment included artists such as Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, and Pablo Picasso. Later exhibitions featured artists such as Jenny Holzer, Claes Oldenburg and others. The 1971 installment of the show was the most well known, and often criticized, of the Sonsbeek exhibitions. Broken Circle/Spiral Hill
''Broken Circle/Spiral Hill'' is an earthwork sculpture by the American artist Robert Smithson. It was created for the 1971 Sonsbeek outdoor sculpture exhibition. The piece is located in Emmen, Netherlands. Description ''Broken Circle/Spiral Hill'' is the sole large-scale earthwork piece created by Smithson outside of the United States. It was commissioned as a temporary public work of art. In 1971, when it was commissioned, “No (written) agreements were made concerning the ownership and future maintenance of the work.” The approximately diameter ''Broken Circle'' earthwork consists of a jetty and canal; it was constructed of white and yellow sand on the bank of a quarry lake 10-to-15 (3 - 4.5 m) feet deep. Arnhem
Arnhem ( or ; german: Arnheim; South Guelderish: ''Èrnem'') is a city and municipality situated in the eastern part of the Netherlands about 55 km south east of Utrecht. Robert Smithson
Robert Smithson (January 2, 1938 – July 20, 1973) was an American artist known for sculpture and land art who often used drawing and photography in relation to the spatial arts. His work has been internationally exhibited in galleries and museums and is held in public collections. He was one of the founders of the land art movement whose best known work is the ''Spiral Jetty'' (1970). Early life and education Smithson was born in Passaic, New Jersey, and spent his childhood in Rutherford until he was nine. In Rutherford, the poet and physician William Carlos Williams was Smithson's pediatrician. When Smithson was nine, his family moved to the Allwood section of Clifton. Ruangrupa
Ruangrupa, stylised as ruangrupa and abbreviated as ruru, is a contemporary art collective based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Knight Jan Hoet (; 23 June 1936 – 27 February 2014) was the Belgian founder of SMAK (''Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst'' or Municipal Museum for Contemporary Art) in Ghent, Belgium. Ann Hamilton (artist)
Ann Hamilton is a visual artist who emerged in the early 1980s known for her large-scale multimedia installations. After receiving her BFA in textile design from the University of Kansas in 1979, she lived in Banff, Alberta, and Montreal, Quebec, Canada before deciding to pursue an MFA in sculpture at Yale in 1983. From 1985 to 1991, she taught on the faculty of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Since 2001, Hamilton has served on the faculty of the Department of Art at the Ohio State University.
