Sonia Steinman Gold (December 17, 1917 in New York City – August 31, 2009) was a United States government employee in the 1930s and 1940s, who has been alleged to be part of the Silvermaster spy ring in Washington D.C., spying for the Soviet Union during World War II. Biography Prior to World War II she worked for the United States House of Representatives Select Committee on Interstate Migration and in the United States Bureau of Employment Security. Sonia Gold received an appointment after Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Harry Dexter White was asked by the Communist Party USA underground secret apparatus to place her within his office. The appointment within the Treasury Department Division of Monetary Research was to help facilitate the transmission of stolen documents to the Soviet Union. French National Committee
The French National Committee (french: Comité national français, CNF) was the coordinating body created by General Charles de Gaulle which acted as the government in exile of Free France from 1941 to 1943. The committee was the successor of the smaller Empire Defense Council. It was Winston Churchill who suggested that de Gaulle create a committee, in order to lend an appearance of more constitutionally based and less dictatorial authority. According to historian , De Gaulle went on to accept his proposal, but took care to exclude all his adversaries within the Free France movement, such as Émile Muselier, André Labarthe and others, retaining only "yes men" in the group. The CNF was founded 24 September 1941 by an edict signed by General de Gaulle in London. Random House is an American book publisher and the largest general-interest paperback publisher in the world. The company has several independently managed subsidiaries around the world. Allen Weinstein
Allen Weinstein (September 1, 1937 – June 18, 2015) was an American historian, educator, and federal official who served in several different offices. He was, under the Reagan administration, cofounder of the National Endowment for Democracy in 1983. He served as the Archivist of the United States from February 16, 2005, until his resignation on December 19, 2008. After his resignation, he returned to the International Foundation for Electoral Systems as a senior strategist and was a visiting faculty member at the University of Maryland. Venona Project
The Venona project was a United States counterintelligence program initiated during World War II by the United States Army's Signal Intelligence Service (later absorbed by the National Security Agency), which ran from February 1, 1943, until October 1, 1980. It was intended to decrypt messages transmitted by the intelligence agencies of the Soviet Union (e.g. the NKVD, the KGB, and the GRU). Initiated when the Soviet Union was an ally of the US, the program continued during the Cold War, when the Soviet Union was considered an enemy. During the 37-year duration of the Venona project, the Signal Intelligence Service decrypted and translated approximately 3,000 messages. Bela Gold, also Bill Gold, (1915–2012), was a Hungarian-born American businessman and professor. Biography Bela Gold was born on 30 January 1915, in Kolozsvár (then in Austria-Hungary, now Cluj-Napoca, in Romania). His parents were Esther (born 1891) and Leo Gold (born 1890), a dry goods salesman. His brother was William Gold (born 1921). In 1920, the family emigrated to the United States.
