Songimvelo-Malolotja Transfrontier Conservation Area
The Songimvelo-Malolotja Transfrontier Censervation Area is a peace park located on the South Africa - Eswatini border between Barberton (South Africa) and Pigg's Peak (Eswatini) and covers an area of approximately , with potential extensions of another . The core of the park is to be the Songimvelo Game Reserve in South Africa and the Malolotja Nature Reserve in Eswatini. These parks share a common border. On the Eswatini side are three protection-worthy areas, namely the Bulembu National Landscape, Makhonjwa National Landscape, and the Sondeza National Landscape. A transboundary protected area (TBPA) is an ecological protected area that spans boundaries of more than one country or sub-national entity. Such areas are also known as transfrontier conservation areas (TFCAs) or peace parks. TBPAs exist in many forms around the world, and are established for various reasons. The preservation of traditional animal migration patterns, ensuring sufficient food and water sources for population growth, is a critical reason for the creation of TBPAs. However, TBPAs also encourage tourism, economic development and goodwill between neighbouring countries, as well as making it easier for indigenous inhabitants of the area to travel. Barberton is a town in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, which has its origin in the 1880s gold rush in the region. Songimvelo Game Reserve
Songimvelo Game Reserve is a provincial park managed by the Mpumalanga Parks Board in Mpumalanga, South Africa. ''Songimvelo'' is a plural word that means 'we are conserving nature' in the siSwati language. This park forms part of the Songimvelo-Malolotja Transfrontier Conservation Area, a peace park on the border between South Africa and Eswatini. The park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018 as the landscape represents one of the best-preserved successions of volcanic and sedimentary rock, dating back 3.6 to 3.25 billion years. Bulembu National Landscape
Bulembu is a small town located in northwestern Hhohho, Eswatini, 10 km west of the town of Piggs Peak and close to the border with South Africa. Located above the Komati Valley in Eswatini's Highveld, Bulembu is named after the siSwati word for a spider's web. The town of Bulembu is privately owned by a not-for-profit, Bulembu Ministries Eswatini. The Bulembu Foundation is based in Vancouver, Canada. Background Between 1939 and 2001, Bulembu operated as a chrysotile (white asbestos) mine. Originally named Havelock Mine, the mine was part of the UK's Turner & Newall Asbestos Group. The mine encountered heavy losses in the late 1980s and subsequently went bankrupt in 1991. The company was liquidated and the assets purchased in 1991 by HVL Asbestos Swd.
