Sonceboz-Sombeval
Sonceboz-Sombeval is a municipality in the Jura bernois administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is located in the French-speaking Bernese Jura (''Jura Bernois''). History Sonceboz-Sombeval is first mentioned in 866 as ''Summavallis''. In 1179 it was mentioned as ''Sommeval'' and in 1303 it was ''Suntzelbo''. Its location at the foot of the historic Pierre Pertuis pass (in operation since the Roman era) made the villages an important stopping point and transportation hub. The Petinesca Roman road ran to the east of Sonceboz before it crossed the Jura mountains. The ruins of a 4th-century Roman settlement have been discovered at the Le Châtillon ridge. The Biel/Bienne–La Chaux-de-Fonds railway is a single-track standard-gauge railway line of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). History The 42-kilometer route from Biel/Bienne via Sonceboz-Sombeval to Convers together with a branch from Sonceboz-Sombeval to Tavannes was built by the Jura bernois (JB) and opened on 30 April 1874. In Convers, the carriages were attached to the trains to La Chaux-de-Fonds for the short remaining section to Neuchâtel. This avoided, for the time being, a second tunnel to La Chaux-de-Fonds through a higher part of the range. The Sonceboz-Sombeval–Moutier railway is a single-track standard gauge railway line of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). History The line from Biel/Bienne via Sonceboz-Sombeval to Moutier was built by the Jura bernois (JB) and was part of the international connection from Bern to Delémont and on to Belfort via Delle or Basel.
