Sonata In B Minor (Atterberg)
The Sonata in B minor, Op. 27 is the only sonata written by Swedish composer Kurt Atterberg. It can be performed by either a string instrument (violin, viola, cello) or horn with piano. History The sonata was completed in 1925. Originally intended for cello (the composer's instrument), it was published in 1930 as a sonata for cello, viola or violin and piano. The cello version was played by Atterberg himself in the early winter of 1925 in the Organ Hall of the Royal Academy of Music. A performance at an ISCM concert followed a few months later. Kurt Atterberg
Kurt Magnus Atterberg (, 12 December 188715 February 1974) was a Swedish composer and engineer. He is best known for his symphonies, operas, and ballets. Biography Atterberg was born in Gothenburg. His father was Anders Johan Atterberg, engineer; his uncle was the chemist Albert Atterberg. His mother, Elvira Uddman, was the daughter of a famous male opera singer. In 1902, Atterberg began learning the cello, having been inspired by a concert by the Brussels String Quartet, featuring a performance of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 8. Six years later he became a performer in the Stockholm Concert Society, now known as the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as publishing his first completed work, the Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 1. Ilona Prunyi
Ilona Prunyi (born 1 May 1941 in Debrecen) is a Hungarian pianist, and music educator. She received a prize at the Liszt Competition in Budapest in 1994, the Bartók Pásztory Prize in 2011, and the Hungarian Merited Artist Award in 2015. Life Ilona Prunyi studied from 1958 to 1963 at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, with József Gát and András Mihály. She became a lecturer there, but struggled with a long illness in the first few years. In Paris she took a course with Yvonne Lefébure. She was friends with Annie Fischer. Prunyi made her concert debut in 1974, and has since played with the Hungarian orchestras, chamber orchestras, played piano four hands, and also performed as a soloist. She has been awarded the Artisjus Award several times. Schwann was a German classical music record label based in Düsseldorf and originally connected with the Verlag Schwann publishing house. One of the first records in 1962 was an LP of musical examples to accompany a book on medieval music. The book publishing business of Verlag Schwann is now part of Cornelsen Verlag. Violin Sonatas
A violin sonata is a musical composition for violin, often accompanied by a keyboard instrument and in earlier periods with a bass instrument doubling the keyboard bass line. The violin sonata developed from a simple baroque form with no fixed format to a standardised and complex classical form. Since the romantic age some composers have pushed the boundaries of both the classical format as well as the use of the instruments. The early violin sonata In the earliest violin sonatas a bass instrument and the harpsichord played a simple bass line (continuo) with the harpsichord doubling the bass line and fixed chords while the violin played independently. The music was contrapuntal with no fixed format. Georg Philipp Telemann wrote many such sonatas as did Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach also wrote sonatas with harpsichord obbligato, which freed the keyboard instrument from playing only a bass line accompaniment and allowed in to enhance the part of the soloist.
