Somonauk Creek is a tributary of the Fox River, which it joins in the Northville Township part of Sheridan, Illinois, United States. Somonauk Creek is approximately in length,U.S. Geological Survey. It has been dammed to form Lake Holiday, south of the village of Somonauk. The lake is the second lake in the City of Sandwich, with the first, Lake Davis, having been drained in the early 1900s to create usable farmland. The community later needed a lake to replace the one it lost, so in agreement with the Village of Somonauk, the community decided to place a dam on Somonauk Creek to form the new lake. The lake was marketed to the suburbs of Chicago as a recreation spot, with the community later making it a permanent subdivision, with housing located around the whole lake. The DeKalb County portion of Somonauk is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the small portion that lies in LaSalle County is part of the Ottawa, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area. Early history The name "Somonauk" is of Pottawatomie origin. The name is most likely derived from the phonetic phrase ''As-sim-in-eh-kon'', which translates to "pawpaw grove", in reference to the vast groves of pawpaw trees that filled the area at that time. Sandwich, Illinois
Sandwich is a city in DeKalb and Kendall counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. Its population was 7,421 at the 2010 census and 7,221 at the 2020 census. History The town's history is tied to politician "Long John" Wentworth and his efforts to move the Illinois border with Wisconsin from being even with the bottom of Lake Michigan to its present location. If those efforts had not been successful, the state line would reside along the LaSalle-DeKalb County border, placing the incorporated community in Wisconsin. The community was established when Almon Gage sought a railroad stop on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad that ran through town. Originally naming it Newark Station (not to be confused with the nearby village of Newark) he and Wentworth worked extensively to create the community and also to get the railroad stop created.
