Something Happened (film)
''Something Happened'' ( sv, Någonting har hänt) is a Swedish film directed by Roy Andersson. The film was conceived as an educational film about AIDS, but raised controversy and was withdrawn. The film claims that HIV was developed in American military laboratories, and that its well-established African origin is a cover-up conspiracy by the Americans. Today the film is regarded as a significant step in the development of the style seen in the director's later and more acclaimed films. Production In 1986, the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare contracted Roy Andersson to write and direct an information film about AIDS to be shown in Swedish schools and to military conscripts. At the time, Andersson had not made a film since the financially unsuccessful ''Giliap'' from 1975, and had since then mainly worked with television commercials. Roy Arne Lennart Andersson (born 31 March 1943) is a Swedish film director, best known for ''A Swedish Love Story'' (1970), '' About Endlessness'' (2019) and his "Living trilogy," which includes '' Songs from the Second Floor'' (2000), '' You, the Living'' (2007) and ''A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence'' (2014). ''Songs from the Second Floor'', more than any other, cemented and exemplified his personal style – which is characterized by long takes, absurdist comedy, stiff caricaturing of Swedish culture and grotesque. ''World of Glory'' is a 1991 Cinema of Sweden, Swedish short film written and directed by Roy Andersson. Its original Swedish title is ''Härlig är jorden'', which means "Lovely is the Earth", and is the Swedish title of the hymn "Fairest Lord Jesus". The narrative portrays a man in white make-up who guides the viewer through his life in a bleakly stylised world, beginning with a scene with soldiers loading nude adults and children into a gas van for execution. The film was Andersson's critical comeback to cinema, after many years in advertising. Production In 1975, Andersson's critical and commercial failure ''Giliap'' had forced him to disappear from the cinema scene and instead work as a director of advertisements. The Swedish Film Institute ( sv, Svenska Filminstitutet) was founded in 1963 to support and develop the Swedish film industry. The institute is housed in the ''Filmhuset'' building located in Gärdet, Östermalm in Stockholm. The building, completed in 1970, was designed by architect Peter Celsing.
