Somerville City Hall
The Somerville City Hall (which formerly served as Somerville High School) is a historic municipal building at 93 Highland Avenue in Somerville, Massachusetts. Built in 1852 and enlarged several times, it has served as the city's first high school, first public library, and only city hall. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Description Somerville City Hall is located at the northeast corner of School Street and Highland Avenue at the western end of the Central Hill area of the city, a cluster of municipal buildings that includes the current Somerville High School and its Central Library. The present appearance of the building is as a 2-1/2 story brick Colonial Revival structure, with a gable roof and a projecting square section at the center of its east-facing front facade. Tuscan Order
The Tuscan order (Latin ''Ordo Tuscanicus'' or ''Ordo Tuscanus'', with the meaning of Etruscan order) is one of the two classical orders developed by the Romans, the other being the composite order. It is influenced by the Doric order, but with un-fluted columns and a simpler entablature with no triglyphs or guttae. Melvin & Young
Isaac Melvin (1811-1853) was an American architect from Massachusetts. Melvin was born in Concord, Massachusetts in 1811. In the 1830s, he established himself as a builder in Lexington. In 1841 he relocated to Cambridge, where he added architecture to his profession. In about 1848 he gave up construction, taking up solely architecture. He formed a partnership with Isaiah B. Young (who had worked with him since 1846), and the two opened an office in Boston. They dissolved their partnership in 1852, when Melvin decided to go to San Francisco. He grew ill on the voyage, and died in San Francisco soon after his arrival. After Melvin's departure, Young pursued an architectural career in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Cincinnati.
